Anyone watch Private Practice?? question poll

Did u see last week's episode? I don't always watch it, but it was dvr'd and so I was sitting here watching it......

They did an episode on selective genetic baby making.....like selecting to make a baby w/dwarfism for two parents w/dwarfism.....

Made me think---I knew a lady who saw a dr about this hoping to genetically select a "girl" embryo bc she already has 2 boys.......

So where do you stand on genetically selecting embryos?

Re: Anyone watch Private Practice?? question poll

  • I think it is scary...

  • I'm personally completely against it. I'm a Christian and feel that by selecting, you're "playing God"...

I also fear that it will lead to selecting what children look like--like their hair color, eye color, etc.

  • I wouldn't ever do it.

If someone else wanted to do it and a Dr. had no medical reason to not do it (dwarfism is questionable since there are often a lot of medical complications associated with it), I say to each their own.

  • It's a scary thought. Have you seen the movie Godsent? Or whatever that movie is called with the Cloned boy? Scary scary. I'd be afraid I'd select a boy or girl & get killed by him/her later.

    Yes. It freaked me out.

  • I think it is scary also.

  • Unless it is to prevent a serious medical problem. No way. We shouldn't play God.

    This.

  • I do agree that selecting embryos based on their genetic makeup is scary, however, that episode does point out that people who choose to do various types of testing are just beginning down that "slippery slope".

I was a philosophy major in college and actually wrote a paper about this in college for my Medical Philosophy class and it was a very interesting area to research.

Many people feel that doing tests, like amnio, and then terminating if there is something dramatically wrong, is acceptable.  I am one of those people.  I do see, however, that this is the 1st step toward selecting the traits of your baby.

Obviously there is a common sense line that should not be crossed, but the genetic pre-screening tests that many women do during pregnancy, are a step in this direction.
