Ultrasound related. PIP and question:

Here is Quentin at 9 weeks and 3 days. This was when my very first u/s was.?
My question is: When does your OB do your very first u/s? Was it early or was it later in the pregnancy like mine was? It was agonizing waiting til 9 weeks, but the doc insist all her patients wait that long so you can see an actual 'baby' by then (aka gummy bear).?
How about you? And--- PIP your first u/s if you have it! :)

Re: Ultrasound related. PIP and question:

  • I had my first u/s at 6 weeks, 1 day but that is because I had no idea when my due date was (we were not TTC) so they had to date it somehow!

My doc does them pretty early though regardless.

Most only do an anatomy scan at 20 weeks if there are no other issues.

Mine was at 8 weeks for bleeding though.

ETA: 9 weeks is by no means "late in the pregnancy". That would be "extremely early in the pregnancy", though not as early as some others.

  • My OB only does one at around 20 weeks.  Our first was done around 8 weeks because I had some bleeding...here's B's first picture:

  • I had my first around 9 weeks as well, that is the dating one that my doc does.

  • Very interesting responses. I honestly thought waiting til 9 weeks was much longer than most because most ladies on here have them around 6 weeks or 7 weeks.
I had no idea some of you had to wait until 20 weeks for your first real u/s.?
    Hmmm.
  • I had my first u/s at 7 weeks.  We were not TTC (I was on bc), so the doctor did it to date the pregnancy.

    Hmmm.

A lot of people here have had past m/c, bleeding, etc. but normal really is just to get 1-2 ultrasounds if not just 1. Same reason not everyone here gets betas, kwim?

  • First (and only) ultrasound was at 23 weeks. I never scanned the pics, so I can't PIP.

  • Mine was at 8 weeks for dating. That's standard practice at my OB's office, and most of the others I know of in the area wait until then, too.

I think it's odd that practices don't bring women in as soon as they find out (especially first time moms) just to go over some of the "pregnancy basics"... seems like it could prevent a lot of the ridiculous 1st tri worries and questions.

  • My doc must be U/S obsessed or something. I have absolutely no issues/complications and I've already had about 4 or 5 I think for Lauryn. With Nick I had a bunch of them too. I recall getting at least 2 trans-vag u/s which would mean they were before the baby would even show up on an external ultrasound. Then, I get the anatomy ultrasound at a different office, I'm having another one around 30 weeks...yeah, I get them all the time. Weird.
  • Mine was 6w3d. I think. Pretty sure.

Anyway, my doc got me in that early because I needed to be on blood thinner shots starting at 8w and he wanted to accurately date the pregnancy.

DD was just a little speck - looked like (and was the size of) a piece of rice. The yolk sac was as big as she was. DH saw 2 spots on the u/s and started to freak thinking it was 2 babies.

  • my first one was at 10wks i think. the first appt was at 8 wks and they jsut go over paperworkwith you and then the u/s at 10wks. I ow have a different doc so maybe they will do things differently this time.

Well, as soon as I found out I was pg, they had me come in at 5 weeks to get blood work and a urine test, and to have a consultation with the nurse about pregnancy. I am thankful they did that for me. But the u/s wasn't until the 9 wk mark.?

  • 12-14 weeks for dating and first check for abnormalities (not scanned in, sorry!), and then 20ish weeks.  I had a few extras for amniotic fluid checks due to GD.

Mine was at almost 7 weeks. I only had an u/s because I requested one, saying I thought I might be having twins. They thought I was nuts, but I was right. Typically they only do one around 20 weeks. I ended up having close to 50 ultrasounds throughout my pregnancy, maybe more. I lost count :)

  • Normal practice for my OB's office for someone with no complications and under the age of 35, one at around 20 weeks.

That being said, I was over 35 and had one m/c prior, my first u/s was at 5 wks. (saw no hb) so we did another one a week later.  I had two bleeding episodes, had a u/s each time to make sure all was ok.  At my big u/s DS's kidneys were slightly swollen so I had another u/s 4 weeks later to make sure everything was good.

  • My first was at 9 weeks for dating purposes, and then after my 20 week u/s I had one every month or so because DS has an enlarged kidney and they wanted to watch it closely.

  • With DD my first ultrasound was at the NT scan.  If I had declined that testing, it would have been at 20 weeks.

This time, my OB has done an ultrasound at every appointment.  At 4 weeks to date the pregnancy; at 6 weeks to confirm heartbeat; and at 11 weeks when she couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler.  Then I had the NT scan done at 12 weeks.   I'm pretty sure there won't be anymore until the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

  • Mine was at 5w because of bleeding. Than a follow up to be sure the next week.

Normally I wouldn't of had one till 20weeks.

    I don't buy a word of this.

No way are you a day over 30, wtf?

  • We only got 1 ultrasound and I think it was 20 weeks or 19, can't remember.  I was always jealous of other people who got to have multiple ultrasounds.  It was worth the wait to see her though.

  • My first u/s was at 8 weeks.  When I called for my first appointment, they wanted to see me between 8-10 weeks.

  • I had one, the "big one", at 21 weeks.  My doc doesn't do any others if everything is normal.  From what I've read and heard, all these ultrasounds are unnecessary in a normal pregnancy, and my doc insisted that it's not good to do too many.  In fact, she had research posted in her office about the excessive number of ultrasounds done these days and why they are not good...I can't remember the details but I should look it up.  Hmm...

Anyhow, here he is at 21 weeks:

  • My 1st ultrasound wasn't until the big reveal at 20ish weeks. My insurance only paid for 2 so they supposed to give one at 20 weeks and one at around 30.

    ?

That's so crazy that you knew before the doctor did that you were having twins! Mother's intuition is amazing.?

  • Early ultrasounds are standard for IF patients. I had one at 5w5d for bleeding with this pregnancy, but would have had an early one anyhow to determine viability. By 8 weeks, I had had 4 with this pregnancy. Then another at 12 weeks (NT scan). My next one will be the big one at 19 or so weeks. That will likely be it for this pregnancy unless there are issues. It was similar with DS, if I remember correctly.

ETA: I should add that I am also over 35, but I don't think it would have made a difference in my case since I did IF treatments.?

  • It was at 7 weeks both times.

  • my first u/s was at 7w3d. (my OB did u/s on everyone at that time, to rule out ectopic pgs, since they had a patient that died from one.)

  • My doc only does an u/s at 20 weeks unless there was an issue. I had one at 8 weeks because she had a hard time finding the heartbeat.

  • If I hadn't opted for the NT scan at 11 weeks, I wouldn't have had an ultrasound until the "big" one at 18 weeks. That's it.

  • The reason I had my early is because I thought I had kidney stones again. They decided to check on the baby while I was there.
  • W/DS#1, I had my 1st u/s at 10 wks but that was b/c dr couldn't hear the heartbeat.  W/DS#2, I had the first one at 14 wks b/c it was the integrated screening test.  Otherwise it would have been the 18-20 wk one.

At the practice I went to, they had a class before your first OB appointment.  I think it was so that the OBs didn't have to answer the same questions over and over again.  You could go in as soon as you knew you were pregnant.  They would answer all the questions about what you can/can't eat, what to watch out for, things you might expect, etc.  They also gave us the pregnancy book that they gave to all OB patients.  They gave you the number for the on-call nurse if anything went wrong and all that.  I thought it was really informative and answered all my questions so that I didn't need to see the OB.  They they said you should see the OB between 8-10 weeks.

Also, I had my first u/s at 8 weeks, my first OB appointment.  I was pretty sure how far along I was, but I have a bad family history of miscarriages/losses, so I was terrified.  My OB did it and she wasn't very skilled at the ultrasound machine, so no pictures.

Then I had my standard one at 20 weeks, which is usually the only one they do at that practice.

I also never had my beta levels tested.

  • First US at 8w1d.  DS was measuring 6w5d, about what I had expected since I knew that I had ovulated on cd 21 and the dr based dates off of last period.  We had an US at every app, the office doesn't have a doppler, only us machines.  Probably had about 30 us between all of the office and triage visits.

  • I had my first one at 20 weeks. If my pregnancy had been uncomplicated that would have been it, but since I started showing signs of IUGR I had another at 31 weeks which showed a small baby which lead to another at 35 weeks. I had one in triage to make sure the baby was heads down but I don't really count that one.

  • I had mine at 6 weeks when I went in for my first appt. My OB was awesome though and did an ultrasound at every appt up until I started going every two weeks.  I have tons of ultrasound pics. She always printed them out and printed out lots of extras for us b/c she knew that we didn't have any family but MIL in FL with us... so she wanted us to be able to mail the pics to our family in OH.
