Trying to Get Pregnant

Too early to test?

This might be a stupid question but I'm curious to see what you all would do.

DH was supposed to be away until Monday, which was perfect because I promised I wouldn't test until he got home.

Well his plans changed and he's coming home tonight and wants me to POAS tomorrow.

Why does FF say not to test until 18dpo? people have gotten BFPs as early as 9 dpo, I'm not sure why it's saying to wait so long.

Re: Too early to test?

  • You can test but just keep in mind a negative may not really be a negative.

Unless you're ready for disappointment, don't test until AF is due.  FF is telling you to test at 18DPO because AF would officially be late, so it wouldn't be a waste of a test or a let down.

I think the earliest most people will tell you is 11DPO, but that's still a craps shoot.

  • FF is telling you to wait because you probably don't have enough cycles for them to accurately predict how long your cycle is. I just started charting, and mine recommends 18 DPO as well. However, I haven't ever had a cycle over 31 days so I will probably test around the time AF is due..or just wait to see if AF shows up.
  • Getting a +HPT at 9dpo, while it does happen occasionally, is not super common.  It's best to wait until you're at least 14dpo and even then tests aren't 100% accurate.

The reason FF tells you to wait until 18dpo is because you haven't charted long enough yet.  Until you have 3 cycles under your belt so it can learn your cycle, it tells you 18dpo to be sure you have enough time to build up the necessary hormones.

Tomorrow is too early to test IMO.  I would wait until Sunday at least.

  • You can test if you want but even if you are KU, it may be too early to detect. This is the % accuracy of being able to detect it early ( so, even tomorrow at 10 DPO it still may not be able to pick up if you are KU)

    10 dpo : 35%
    11 dpo : 51%
    12 dpo : 62%
    13 dpo : 68%
    14 dpo : 74%
    15 dpo : 80%
    16 dpo : 88%
    17 dpo : 92%

  • I would wait until at least 14 dop.  Unless a BFN won't crush you.
  • I got a - HPT at about 10 dpo. Waited a week (until AF was actually late) and it was +. Early testing is not a great idea, IMO. And I'm officially done testing early.

  • Your chart looks good, but it is quite early... I am assuming this is your first cycle charting? that means that you don't know how long your usual lp length is, so you could get several false negatives, even if you end up getting ku this cycle. So it's up to you!

  • definitely wait!  BFN are crushing and frustrating and they build up every month.  If you are PG it's best to keep your mind busy and wait until you're actually "late"...plus PG tests are soooo expensive!
