Trader Joes and Whole Foods...

I'm heading to both this weekend, but have never been to Whole Foods before.  What are some things you buy specifically at TJ vs WF and vice versa?  Thanks!

Re: Trader Joes and Whole Foods...

  • whole foods is more expensive but has a larger selection. I always go to TJ first and buy everything I can there, and then only use whole foods if there was something I couldn't find at TJ.

  • I buy cheese and both places, lots and lots of cheese. :)

WF is more expensive overall, but they are cheaper on certain things than even my normal grocery store - like the 365 brand of broth, canned beans, etc. and their bulk selection of grains is great. I also love getting ground bison there (my butcher doesn't carry it for some reason). I LOVE their seeduction bread (though it's a little $$) and I buy stuff I can't find at my regular store like ficoco (fig/cocoa spread), canned tomatillos, random ethnic ingredients.

Trader Joe's -well, right now, you MUST get the TJ's candy cane joe joes. They're like Oreos with candy canes crushed into the cream. I'm addicted. I also really like their salsas, granola bars, and chicken sausage.  I also get their brand of Greek yogurt, which is cheaper than Fage/Oikos.

I buy Ezekiel bread at both places.

  • We call WF whole paycheck because they are expensive. They do have a large selection and if you have certain food allergies like with gluten or wheat they have a good selection of alternatives. Also, if there is something you aren't sure you are going to like, tell a employee there, they'll have you try it so you don't waste money on something that isn't going to please you. As for TJs, there is limited selection but you can get a lot for a little. Go to TJs first get what you need there and then check out WF and see what they have and get the things you know you can't find else where. We found that a quite a few items they have we can find at our local Jewel for a much lower price.
  • TJ's has some really great frozen  dinners. One just opened by me so I stocked the freezer but have yet to try them. I hear the gnocchi is great. Also, their frozen fish and burritos are suppose to be awesome.

  • I never really shop @ WF because I don't have one that close to me. TJ's on the other hand... I buy it all. I love their mixed salad greens, as well as their cheeses, frozen veggies, greek yogurt... the chocolate pudding!!!! Oh... and I can't forget the dried mango dusted is chili powder.... mmmmm....

  • I try to do pretty much all my shopping at TJs.  Their frozen jasmine rice is great, as is their pre-cooked frozen pasta.  Also on my weekly list -- pasta sauce, turkey meatballs, yogurt, pizza dough, sea salt brownies, fruit leather, pre-cooked chicken tenders, hummus.

This is what I do also ...

  • I LOVE the 365 Brand Fruitsicles from Whole Foods!  Coconut is my personal favorite, and my DH loves the Strawberry.  Just stocked up on 3 boxes Sunday!!  Their deli department also has really yummy penne mac n cheese...

TJ's - their frozen orange chicken is really good...dried fruit selection is yum...Frozen Fettucini Alfredo isn't bad either, but you kinda have to add to it, but it's a good one to have in the freezer & throw some mushrooms and chicken in for a quick dinner...

    Have fun!!

  • I don't usually shop at Whole Foods b/c of the crazy prices, but sometimes they have normal prices on their sale items. For instance, sometimes olives (from the olive bar) are the same price as at Safeway, so if I see that I buy them. They have really good ones! It's not usually worth it for me to make a trip there, though.

From TJ's, I buy the following (all are cheaper than at the regular grocery store):

    Joe's O's (Cheerio's for only 1.99 for a big box!)

    Grated Parmesan

    Milk

    Soy Milk

    Eggs

    Fake Egg

2 Buck Chuck (for cooking, not drinking)

    Bananas

    Soy ice cream

I also buy these (not b/c they're cheaper, but b/c I like them):

    Raw almonds

    Dried Mango (no sugar added)

Various chips--TJ brand Terra Chips, Lentil/potato twirls, popped potato chips

    Dark chocolate crisps
