lemen

Hi!

We had our second visit with Dr. E. today and he is reccomending we don't do the swallow study in 2 weeks. He says since Alex is gaining weight and doing so well it is unnecessary. He has changed her meds to Prilosec and started her on Miralax plus oatmeal in all bottles and starting solids. He thinks the constipation is making the reflux worse and poor stomach emptying is causing her to not want to eat. I am feeling a bit overwhelmed but not cancelling that swallow study till we see how she does the next week or so. He is afraid that by doing the study 'we'll just open a can of worms' with therapists, etc. Was he anti swallow study for Andrew? I am feeling so conflicted. But on the bright side he thinks Alex looks fabulous!! :) And we tried oatmeal tonight and she did great! I tried it in the bottle too but couldn't get it through the nipples we had. I've ordered y cut nipples and should have them in a couple of days. So I plan to keep up with the oatmeal and start a green stage 1 veggie this weekend.

Re: lemen

  • I think all in all,. that's good news!!!

Honestly I didn't even think to ask Dr. E about the swallow study before having it done.  Andrew was choking out of the blue and we didn't know why, so we had it done and learned something from it.  Of course then when I saw him, immediately he seems to know the cause was that he was losing his sucking reflex and I wonder if we could have avoided the SS if I'd thought to talk to him.

Oh well, it's easy to see that in retrospect, I guess.

When I saw him at Andrew's appointment (after the swallow study), I'd mentioned that the GI doctor wanted to do a follow-up swallow study in December but that I felt really strongly that it was unnecessary unless Andrew continued choking with the SImply Thick or some other symptom. I said as long as he was eating happily, I didn't see any reason to have it done.  His response was, "I like you."

    LOL

    He cracks me up!

Oh!  When Andrew first came home from the NICU, his reflux was really bad.  Eventually we found that his constipation was making things a lot worse (he was miserable and stopped eating after about 5 days of not going) and so the miracle combination for us was more Prilosec than he was already getting + 1 tbsp Miralax per day + a medicine for delayed gastric emptying + no dairy in my diet.  If we kept things moving he did a lot better.

So glad that Alex got a great check-up!  I can't wait to go back to Dr. E.  haha.  I'm a dork. I love watching them do the various test, etc and I think it's fascinating.

I'm glad Alex did well with oatmeal!  I hope she loves the veggies!!

Any reason that you are starting green first? Just curious :-)  We randomly chose sweet potato first but Andrew didn't like it. He loves everything green so far!

     I'm off to bed!

  • P.s. It doesn't surprise me that he was against the SS if she is gaining weight, etc.  He is a very less-is-more guy.  He recommended that we dont' get the h1n1 vaccine (we are anyways..) and that we stop vitamins (which I didn't...) I do like him but I guess I thought it wouldn't hurt to keep doing those things so why not.
  • Ok, last post - do you have a blog?!
  • You are definetly right, Dr. E is a very 'less is more' kind of guy. He seemed pretty against the swallow study and I can agree as long as we see some improvement in things in the next 2 weeks. He made me feel a little guilty about not starting solids but I didn't feel Alex was ready yet and was pretty much waiting for someone to give me the OK (sad that I need permission from a doctor to parent my child, lol). He kept telling me to relax and that she was doing great. Easy for him to say! :)

I did ask about the h1n1 vaccine yesterday (mainly because of our conversations in the past) and he said to go ahead and get it even though he wasn't sure if it really was the right thing to do (reassuring I know). I was planning to get it for her regardless as long as we can find it. That and the regular flu shot as soon as she turns 6 months at the end of the this month.

I do have a blog but I have it password protected. Either PM me your email address or post it on this thread and I'll add you. The blog is all about our baby adventures and I love letting people read it but can't get past all those weirdos out there that might get ahold of it and therefore I keep it private!

Thanks for all your help and input! We did oatmeal again this morning and Alex did so well and then took her bottle without issue. We haven't even started the Prilosec yet because it is still at the pharmacy and won't be ready till this afternoon. We did give her the miralax last night but won't be able to thicken the bottles till our y-cut nipples arrive. I am so optimistic that all this helps! :)

  • That's all great news!!

my email is kathy marie 81 at gmail

I don't blame you for wanting to keep your blog private :-) I thought about it but was too lazy :-) hehe

  • Just sent you an invite -- let me know if you didn't get it!
  • I got it!!

oh my gosh Alex is just beautiful!! She has the cutest little face and her eyes are gorgeous.

Don't even get me started on the butterfly costume.

  • I'm looking at your NICU pics!  Was Alex one of your primaries? We had her a few times, she's super sweet!
  • We had Alex several times in the first week but then when our Alex got MRSA and went into isolation we never got to see her again. In the beginning I was good about taking pictures of nurses but as time progressed I only really tooked pictures of the baby! :)
  • ha. I was embarrassed to ask the nurses if I could take their pic. I do have pics of his primaries though!  We're going to take him back in April and I'll take some more then!

Did you have Lynn (can't think of her last name - short hair, wears glasses, on nights) or Becca (pretty, young, tall, long blond straight hair)? Those were his primaries.  We had 2 associates that were great and a 3rd who left St V about half-way through our stay.

  • Lynn sounds familiar but I am not 100%. Our primaries were Amanda (young, long wavy hair), other Amanda (young, really thin and chin length hair) and another gal who I can't remember but her name started with a D! (oops) I've been in a conference all day and my brain is fried. We also saw a gal named Lucy a lot and in the early days Belinda.
