Not masculine enough?

Our last name is the name of a flower. DH and I both love the name Tristan, but we aren't sure its masculine enough since our last name is so feminine. WDYT?

Re: Not masculine enough?

  • Tristan is on our list for either gender.  Love it, but it may not sound very masculine with a flower last name to be honest.

  • Tristan - I love it. I"m not sure how feminine your last name sounds with it, but maybe use a more masculine middle name to even it out?
  • Tristan = Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall = super-masculine.

  •  I don't really care for it.
  • I like it but it does sound a bit feminine when paired with a flower

  • I like the name but I suppose it depends on the flower.

  • Tristan is nms, and I do think it sounds extremely feminine, even without the name of a flower for a last name. The only ones I have ever personally known are female, so I guess that is why I see it as more feminine.

  • With a feminine sounding last name, I think it'd be too girly for a boy.

  • I have a Tristan. He's not a big tough guy, but I would say he's not feminine.
  • Legends of the Fall was the early '90s. Peyton Manning is a CURRENT NFL Quarterback and that hasn't made his name any more manly among the current naming set.

Until I was informed otherwise, growing up I always assumed Tristan was a girl's name because it's so close to Kristen.

For these reasons, in addition to the flower last name, I would say choose again.

    Tristan Lilly

    Tristan Rose

Yeah...they sound pretty girly, if it's an obvious flower.

  • I have always thought of it as a male name however when I went to college, the Tristain I knew was put on a girls floor for orientation because they thought he was a girl.

  • I think it depends on the flower.  FWIW I never knew a female Tristan and didn't even know it was a girl's name until recently.  I only knew male Tristans for the longest time.

  • Honestly... I wouldn't go for something so gender neutral with a "feminine" sounding last name. I'm not saying a guy couldn't pull off "Tristan Rose" or something to that affect, I just wouldn't go for it personally. Prehaps Tristan could be a mn?
