Trying to Get Pregnant

Ovulation

I can't seem to tell if I am O. I have looked up symptoms of O, and have tried to check my CM, but I'm not really finding anything. I may break down and get one of those kits, but we've only been trying for 3 months now so I feel like it may be  a bit early for something like that. I have put in my info to calculate when I am suppose to O, but I'm not noticing any real changes around that time. Any other ideas?

  • The best way (and only way other than an ultrasound) is to chart with a basal body thermometer.  When you have a temp rise and it stays up for three days, it means you've ovulated.  Are you charting? Have you checked out fertility friend?
  • I was reluctant to really dive into all of the extra temping etc. because we have only been trying for such a short time I didn't want to make it feel longer by adding in all of the extra work. I was hoping to just relax and wait for it to happen, but I'm kind of an excitable person and It is just so darn hard to wait! I'm the person who takes multiple tests the week AF is due because I have got myself convinced I'm going to get a BFP!

  • to be honest, it's not that much work, its very helpful.. you wont get a BFP if you're not having sex around the right time, and by charting you get to know your body and when you ovulate.  Like me, I don't ovulate until like CD 17 or 18.  If I only had sex around days 11-14 like the textbooks say, I'll never get pregnant.  You should give it a try.
  • To be honest....we have sex a lot :) At least every other day and most weeks everyday. I'm home in the mornings and he is laid off until January, so we have some extra time to kill lol So it's not really the when to have sex question, I just want to be sure it's happening? Is this a stupid question ....Sorry for the Newbie stench left on this :)

  • Like I just told you.. you can't physically know it's happening without seeing a thermal shift in your BBT or by getting an ultrasound.  Thats all, there is no other way.  OPK's will only tell you that you have LH in your system, not that you will actually ovulate.

If you aren't worried about timing, charting can still work to help you understand your body each cycle. Start simple by keeping track of cervical mucus (CM) and symptoms. If you really want to be certain you ARE ovulating, start temping. It literally takes 1 minute to temp, 30 seconds to write down you temp and the time you temped as well as you CM. I am so glad I started!

Turns out I ovulated on CD 30 this month... I'd be freaking out about being "late" by now, but I know I'm still waiting for AF. Good luck!

  • thanks cam.. I needed some back up here.. she didnt seem to be getting it.
  • You know there are some girls here who have started charting and temping only to find out they haven't been ovulating.  You will never really know what is happening to your body if you don't learn about it.  If I were queen of the world, every girl would learn how to chart in grade school.  Learning about all of this has been really eye-opening, and I am shocked to find out so many things I was taught in school was wrong wrong wrong.

Do yourself and favor and educate yourself.

  • I don't really have a lot of success with CM or OPKs but temping and charting seems to be pretty foolproof if you do it right. It has been really eye opening for me so of course this is what i would recommend so you know for sure!

  • I've heard so many people say that they wasted months by not knowing they were never ovulating.  Temping really isn't a lot of work at all, it's as simple as putting a thermometer in your mouth and writing down the temperature.

My thought process when I started charting was, why not?  I'd rather spend  1 minute each day to see whether or not I am ovulating than TTC for a year with no luck and having the RE tell me the same thing.  HTH!

  • Is there a special thermometer to use for this or is it as simple as checking your temp. as if you were sick?

Most people recommend a BBT, which is a Basal Body Thermometer, or they might be called Fertility Thermometer.  You can find them in almost any drug store (or even target or walmart).  Some ladies use just a regular old thermometer, which seems to work okay for them.

  • Thanks for all of your help. I feel like I have read so much about TTC lately that my brain is swirling around in my head! There is so much to know and understand. Also, to clarify you check your temp each morning when you wake up, or at least after 3 hours of rest. correct?

Sorry for being a little slow on the uptake, I am new at this and I misunderstood the reason for temping. But thank you for answering and trying to help. If you feel I'm not understanding feel free to be blunt, I have my big girl panties on. :)
