What is a winter formal dance?

Re: What is a winter formal dance?

  • Where I come from, it's a smaller version of the prom. Freshmen and Sophomores can go to the winter formals too.

This was what we had. Girls could wear short or long dresses and it was in the cafeteria at the school instead of at a country club.

  • i'm going out on a limb here, but i'm assuming it's a formal... which takes place during the winter season.
  • We had 3 dances Homecoming, King and Queen of Courts (winter royalty) and Prom

The only one that was formal was prom, unless you were a candidate for royalty. And you had to be a senior to be royalty.

    LOL...true.  ;)

eta: I should have phrased my question differently.  Instead of a homecoming dance, did schools hold a winter formal instead?

Our homecoming dances were always held in the fall, prom about 3 weeks before school ended.

  • Ours was in January, at the end of mid-terms, and was for all the classes (fresh-seniors). It was a lesser version of prom.

  • Ours was at a theme park and awesome! Everyone was dressed up and we got to go on the rides!

  • High School teacher chaperoning our Winter Formal December 5th!!!  Ours is formal but at the high school, not off-site like prom.  It is very well-decorated and holiday-ish, all 4 grades can go and ours is Sadie Hawkins (girls ask the guys.) A lot of couples attend but you can attend solo too, mostly its pods of girls traveling together while the guys stand awkardly in the corner.

Is that like a homecoming dance?

we didn't have a special homecoming dance. Just the winter formal and the prom. a high school across town had MORP. The freshmen and sophomores who weren't lucky enough to have an older date got to go to that.

  • We had homecoming in the fall, winter formal in December and prom in the spring.

The only one at the school was homecoming. The other two were off site. The winter formal wasn't as "formal" as the prom and included all of the students.

  • It is a formal dance, just like homecoming.  Our National Honor Society put it on.  Homecoming was generally in our multi purpose room, Winter Formal was usually at the Elk's club, Moose Lodge, or at some type of hall.  Guys just wore shirts and ties, no tuxes like Prom.
