Wood Flooring and little kids

We're re-doing flooring in a cottage. DH wants to do wood, which I love, but I am wondering how practical that is with little kids. Maybe easy care would be better and we should just do laminate? We want to have a couple more kids in the next few years if all works out. Advice? Recommendations?

  • I heard wood flooring can be the pits if you're not attentive to every spill because wood warps so easily. But it really does look nice.

  • We have real hardwood and pergo in our house.  They both look great - I don't see much of a difference in the appearance.  I actually like our wood better; we had a couple of scratches that my brother was able to buff out.  You can't do that with laminate.
  • we plan to just have our wood floors re-finished after we're done having little kids in the house.  that usually needs to be done eventually anyway.  it makes it easier on us now, because i'm not anal about keeping them perfect anymore, since it's just not possible.  it's actually WAY easier to clean spit-up, spills, etc, off the wood floor than the carpet.

also we use an alphabet foam mat in the area of the wood floor for her to play on, so it's softer and protects the floor from toys.

  • We've had both.  I prefer the look and sound of wood flooring, but scratching is a definite issue.  Laminate is great, also...very easy to take care of and the better quality stuff looks very nice.  I think it's totally a personal preference.  If you're very picky about the condition of your floors, go with laminate.  If you don't mind the look of a few scratches and dings, go with wood.  Have fun shopping!
