A few backup points: I know the exact day I conceived, so I'm not at risk that my baby is younger than I think. I also plan to have an epidural, so it hurting more doesn't concern me too much, although I know that the best laid plans....
Anyway, my doctor keeps telling me we'll induce at 39 weeks because I have PUPPPS and tons of swelling. (I have gained 60lbs, most of it water weight, you'd be grossed out by my pictures, I can barely open my eyes my face is so swollen and I have to wear wrist braces)
At first I wanted to avoid induction, but a different doctor at the same place told me yesterday that there is a very high rate of pitocin use at the hospital anyway, even if you don't opt for it, because of medically necessary inductions and the fact that SO many people get epidurals, the epidurals slow down labor, and they use pitocin to speed it back up.
I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally want baby to come before 40 weeks for tons of reasons. Some of them medical, some of them family related (I'm due Thanksgiving weekend and our families are driving 8+ hours to come be with us for Thanksgiving...if baby doesn't come by 40 weeks they'll have to drive home to work, not knowing when she'll come, and then likely have to turn around and drive right back again the same week), some of them not (we have a huge competition in our hobby Dec 2-3 that I want my husband to compete in, and if she doesn't come early enough he won't be able to). I know everyone feels this way for the most part, but they are basically giving me the option. I can induce at 39 weeks or just wait it out. But if I'm likely going to have to get pitocin anyway (epidural is not optional for me, it's a definite), then I might as well get induced, right?
Re: Induction question--should I?
I'd go for it! You could also try some Old Wive's Tales (walking, pineapple, spicy foods, etc) to try to get labor going, but I would definitely get induced if given the option.
*I might be biased because yesterday I was sent home from L&D for labor not progressing and not be able to have pitocin because I wasn't 39 weeks- today is 39 weeks, I was super annoyed and would have drank pitocin if allowed.
I would want to induce closer to 40 weeks than 39. I would also base my decision on how ready my body seemed for an induction. Otherwise, you're looking at a decent chance of a c-section.
This! And I am being induced with DD2 tomorrow. Had NO complaints the first time. GL!
