Orange juice for toddlers

Growing up, my mom always made us drink a lot of orange juice during cold/flu season.  It got me thinking about the little ones.  Will you/do you give your toddler orange juice through the winter?  If he gets juice now (apple, grape, etc) it's watered down and not very often.  Just curious about your thoughts.

Re: Orange juice for toddlers

  • We don't give DS juice at all.

I would do fresh-squeezed OJ for vitamin C...but that's about it.

  • Justin doesn't drink juice at all right now (it's honestly a taste thing- he just LOVES water) but I wouldn't be opposed to giving him watered down OJ. I think the benefits of OJ are mainly from the vitamin C which could be found in lots of other food.

  • I don't give him juice right now. I'm not sure I'd want to give him orange juice, though, because I've read that the acidity can really be rough on toddlers' tummies. If anything, I try to give him as much fruit as possible that have vitamin C in them, like bananas and apples. I found this site that lists foods and their amounts of vit. C.
  • We haven't given Justin juice yet.  I'm holding out until he asks for it :o)

  • Thanks for the opinions.  And for the website, Wendy.  He isn't the greatest eater...that's on our list to talk to the dr about this week.  I always hoped I wouldn't have a picky eater!
  • The kiddo I watch has had OJ since he was 2.....1/2 watered down.
  • Bambino didn't start drinking juice until 2 and even now, it's not all that often.  When he was sick and couldn't stomach food/milk, I'd have some on hand and dilute it.  Other than that, we make sure to always have fresh fruit around.  I also made purees during the summer and would defrost them to have in yogurt, as a pancake 'dip' or however!   FWIW, bambino still doesn't drink oj and he's 28 mos.

  • Charlie has a splash of OJ every other day or so. We started because it was the only way to get his liquid vitamins down. Now I throw his probiotics in there, or in milk, whichever he asks for in the morning.

He gets maybe an ounce of juice & the rest is water, so its really more of a taste thing than nutritional benefit.
