Great-grandfather passed away & traveling...???

My great-grandfather passed away this morning...his funeral is Friday in Columbus but I live about 7 hours away. I am 32 weeks this week....what is the cut off for travel...any advice? I left a message for my doc this am to see what he suggested and haven't heard back yet. I really want to be there with my family...he was such a special man.

  • I would think you're ok to go - they might just want to check you before you leave to make sure there are no signs of PTL or anything.

  • My doc has said travel is ok until 36 weeks - he just wants me to be careful and follow certain guidelines.  Drink alot, stop and get out to move around every 2 hours or less, and make sure that I have an emergency hospital in the area if needed.
  • I think you would be fine. I live in Columbus and went to Myrtle Beach at 32 weeks. Just make sure you stop and stretch a lot, my feet swelled up VERY bad.

  • I'm sorry for your loss... I would see what the doc says. If you do drive, stop every hour to get out and stretch for sure!

  • Check into where hospitals (that your insurance will cover) are in the area of the funeral.  Everything I have heard is 36 weeks and beyond they want you to stay within an hour of the hospital.

  • I had to travel about 4 hours by car to a big family event at 30 weeks pregnant. We we're traveling by car and stopped every few hours to stretch my legs and go to the bathroom. T &P for you and your family on your loss.
  • I will be flying internationally at 31 weeks and both my OB & perinatologist both gave me the OK to travel until 35 weeks.

I'm so sorry for your family's loss...

  • I was 30 weeks when I went from NJ to MS and back (18 hours one way, with a stop overnight to sleep along the way). Just take a break to walk around every hour, and avoid any salty foods. Drink a lot of water. Make sure you sit in a seat that reclines, and make sure you can put your feet up.

I'm really sorry about your Great-Grandpa.

  • Thanks girls....just spoke with my OB and he is saying the same thing. It's ok to go but take lots of breaks and drink a TON of water. We are having the funeral/visitation all in one day so thankfully it won't be drug out over several days. Just sad he won't be here to meet the baby. We would have been able to take a 5 generations picture like I did when I was born with my great-great grandmother.
