So, my DH and I both got colds sometime last week. His turned into something with a fever and mine into a cough from the chest... that's keeping me up all night. This is our first pregnancy and we don't want to do anything that could be dangerous to the baby, but until the baby comes, we are both going to school full time and he works part time, so we need as much rest as we can get. Three nights now and I think the running total is 4 hours of sleep, and that was mostly during the day on Sunday.
I've tried cough drops. Hot tea. Hot cocoa. Hot water with lemon and honey. Cold water with lemon. Ice water. Ginger ale (also helps with the morning sickness). Warm noodles. Toast with butter. Steam treatment, nasal flushing (neti pot), and a vaporizer in the bedroom. I've tried laying down, sitting up, standing, lounging, every position I can get into. Vitamin C. I even saw our family doctor yesterday, and he was afraid to give me anything and told me to see the OB-GYN, who won't give me an appointment until my 12th week (I'm in week 8).
If anyone has any advice, it would be amazingly appreciated. This cough has moved to my chest and at times it feels like I can't breathe. After a hard cough, it tightens my stomach enough to make me gag and dry heave. I know this isn't dangerous to the baby and for that I am grateful. But it hurts and is making me miserable!
Please help. I don't want to take anything that could hurt my baby, and I've already missed too much school this semester to stay sick much longer. ![]()

I got sick w/ a cough/cold the same day I got a BFP.
After a couple of miserable nights, I gave in and gargled warm salt water, took a couple of tylenol and my MIL suggested rubbing vicks on me feet and covering them with socks all night.
I don't know what worked the best but I slept like a baby that night!
