Okay someone tell me how you deal with work stress...

I have just over 2 weeks left at my job and I'm SOO stressed out!  I'm an Interior Designer and the only job I have left is a soft furnishing (furniture, accessories, etc) job.  The way things work where I'm at is my boss dreams it up and I have to figure out how to make it work... and she's terrible at keeping things manageable.  I've tried to maintain the timeline for getting everything done but some things have ended up out of my control.

Now I'm losing sleep at night over things like whether my client is going to freak out because the chandelier that is going up today might hang lower than she's expecting (can be fixed), or because the custom headboard isn't going to install on time, or because everything isn't going to be in by Thanksgiving...

It doesn't help that my boss is a complete tightwad who expects me to tell our vendors to slash their margins deeper and deeper so that she can make more, and then gets all huffy when we have to pay to fix a mistake.

So, how do you deal with work stress and truly leave it at work?

And, someone please whack me upside the head and remind me that in the greater scheme of ANYTHING, none of what I've done wrong or will do wrong even matters... I mean, for goodness sake, its FURNITURE! So maybe its a little late. It really doesn't matter.

Okay, mini-rant over.  Time to go get ready for work. Two more weeks... just two more weeks and it will ALL be over...

  • I throw things.

Just kidding!  I try to put things in perspective.  I have to tell myself often that one decision or mishap isn't going to make or break the world, or my company.  We do the best we can.  Sometimes that's enough and sometimes it isn't but, so long as you're giving your all there isn't anything more you can do.

  • Would meeting for coffee help you to deal?  Because I'd really, REALLY like to do that again.

    ((hugs))

  • While I'm totally tempted to the you to tell her exactly how you feel (because she probably needs to hear it), in all honestly, I probably wouldn't do it. I'm not sure if you are done just until the pregnancy is over or if you are done for good, but regardless, you may need her as a reference some day. Also, I just never believe in burning bridges, period!

Anyway, that is a really tough position to be in....it's a high stress job because although it's just furniture to you....to the people paying big bucks to have it done....well, it's EVERYTHING to them I'm sure. ;P I've found that not all, but a lot of people with money need their heads pulled from their rears, so I'm guessing you have to deal with a lot of that....you boss probably being one of them as well.

Anyway, that being said.....just keep telling yourself...."this too shall pass" and focus on the fact that in just a few short months you'll be holding your LO and rocking them to sleep without any of that stress. Oh, and it also helped me to chill out by thinking....every time I get stresses, I'm stressing out the baby.....I'd then take a deep breath and exhale....usually worked. =)

I'm leaving mostly to enjoy my time before the baby comes and to get everything ready... but she's made it much easier to leave.  Believe me, the only reason I'm hanging around is because I don't want to ruin this relationship (even though I'm never ever coming back).

And the thing with the clients is they are WONDERFUL people.  I know it's a big deal to them if the stuff doesn't work out right the first time, on time... but the worst that can happen is that things get delayed, and maybe cost a bit more to fix.  Not the end of the world.

  • I tell myself that worst care scenario I will get fired, and since I hate my job anyway, would that really be a bad thing?

I am just praying that DH is employed by the time #2 comes so I can quit!

  • I have to remind myself (and my team) from time to time that we're not saving lives.  Really, I have trouble dealing with work stress - it invades my personal time as well which is why I have decided it's time for a new job.  ;)
