Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Were you allowed to wear a bra during labor?

Tonight at our labor and delivery class the instructor said when I check in, I'll put on a hospital gown, and no underwear (obviously) and no bra!  I am wondering why/if I can wear a wireless bra.  I'll feel pretty uncomfortable if I have to be there for hours on end without a bra on!

Just wondering what others have experienced and hoping I can get them to bend this "rule" if that's what it is...

Re: Were you allowed to wear a bra during labor?

  • I thought the same thing, but when I got to the hospital I realized my sports bra was so wet from sweat because I was rushing around packing my bag that I took it off.  The problem with keeping it on is that if you have to take it off for some reason (emergency c-section or whatever) they will either have to cut it off or hep-lock your IV.

Seriously, you won't care at all.

  • I wore my nursing tank and they werent very happy about it, but I didnt care.
  • nope and ended up not wearing one the whole time i was there i kinda wish i woulda mustered up the energy to put one on oh well
  • They didn't let me wear one either.  All the first pics of me with the baby on the operating table and there is a HUGE boob obstructing the view. :)
  • I wore mine.

  • I wore mine the whole time.. I told them they could cut it off if they needed too.. they laughed they thought it was silly I was giving them the go ahead hahaha
  • I wore a sports bra....but they let me know that in any emergency they would cut it off.

  • The nurses said to take everything off, but I kept a sports bra on under my hospital gown. When I got my epi the nurse asked me to take it off but I asked the anesthesiologist and he said I could keep it on so I did.

This for me too, for both LO's.

  • Yes, I wore a regular bra during my 20-something hours of labor. They only unhooked it once to do the epi but I kept it halfway on after that and they didn't get after me.
  • I wore a bra & shorts in the beginning. Then I took the shorts off while I labored in the tub/shower. Then I ditched the bra and ended up naked for a LONG time. I was so hot and in and out of water it didn't make sense to keep taking clothes on and off. And I was much more comfortable naked. It was nice :)

  • I was allowed to wear whatever I wanted but I did not wear a bra - makes it much easier to nurse post delivery

ETA: I did not labor at the hospital so this was just for pushing/delivery.  I labored naked in a tub most of the time

  • I thought it was weird at first but honestly after a little bit I didn't care! Took it off Thursday night and put one back on probably Saturday afternoon.

    This.

  • I wore a bra and my own nightgown during labor and delivery.  Every time a new nurse or doctor came in the room, the told me that I would ruin the nightgown and I told them that was fine.  I was MUCH more comfy in my nightgown than the hospital gown.  Noone mentioned the bra.  (I loved my nightgown with the button down top.  It was great for nursing.  The hospital gown would have been much more difficult to nurse in.)

This except I did end up taking it off after the epi b/c it was annoying not being hooked.  Would have been easier to take it off at the beginning b/c I ended up having to take my gown off, etc... to get it all the way off, but I was happy I wore it as long as I did for support.

  • I'm pretty sure at that point in my life I stripped ALL my clothes off & wanted NOTHING on. Not even a ring on my finger I threw it at DH. You won't give 2 craps about what your wearing = ) I wanted to wear a bra too......I laugh thinking about it!
  • I wore my nursing bra and they had no problems with it at all.

  • I was told a bra was a no-go and I really missed it (I was a 36F at delivery) since up to that point I was NEVER braless. I didn't get to put one back on until my 3rd day in the hospital.

  • Allowed, but it just got so sweaty and gross, i tore it off later.
  • I wore a underwire nursing bra the entire time and I had an epi.  No one said anything.  My breasts are so sensitive that I felt the need to have it on so that nothing rubbed against them.  It wasn't a problem for me.
  • I really thought I wanted to, but found out I wasn't allowed once I arrived.  I was concerned at first, but quickly came to not care!  I don't remember feeling one bit uncomfortable by going without.

  • I can't imagine wanting to or caring what I wore during labour.
  • I wore a sports bra and birthing skirt. Do not wear the gown they give you- its soo freakin hot and makes you sweat!
  • I had a scheduled c-section and they still gave me the option of leaving my bra on if that was what I wanted.

  • With my third I wore my bra, a white cami (only part of the time) and my own nightgown.  I had to wear my own clothes since that is just how they do it here unless you get an epi.  Not even a drop of blood or anything ended up of the gown.  I am pretty sure I wore a bra with my other 2 as well.  I am just more comfortable with it on.  I also didn't have super long labors where I was all sweaty and gross.
  • i didn't wear one and my nurse told m to take everything off
  • Yes, I wore a sports bra.

The only issue was that once I wanted to take it off (after he was born and about to nurse), I wasn't able to due to the IV of fluids I was getting at the time.  I was able to pull it down, but it was uncomfortable after awhile.

  • I wore a bra and underwear ...up until it was time to push then they took my undies off.  I wore whatever I wanted actually...it was nice.  I didn't wear the gown.
  • I was. I would have raised hell if they said I couldn't, but I'm very well-endowed and I would have been unbelievably uncomfortable without one.

  • I wore a bra and my own nightgown. When I first got there, the nurse told me to put on the hospital gown and when she left the room I just balled it up and threw it in the corner. For the first night I was there (before they started the pitocin), I wore yoga pants and a comfortable maternity shirt. When they came to put in the IV, I switched into the nightgown and kept that on until after he was born. No one said anything to me about what I could or couldn't wear.

  • I had on my nursing bra through labor, pushing, and an unplanned C-section.  No one ever said anything about it.
image Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I was induced, labored for 17 hours, got an epi, ended up with a c-section and I got to wear my bra the entire time.  Like PP, I wish I hadn't though, b/c nursing was much more difficult afterward and the IV made it difficult since I couldn't get the bra off.
  • I wore a bra.  And I wore my own gown.  And I kept my underwear on until my doctor broke my water.  My bra wasn't a sports bra or a nursing bra either.

I had no problem removing the bra and slipping my gown down after LO was born for skin-to-skin and immediate breastfeeding.

I don't get why people always say "you wont care when it's all happening."  I would have been uncomfortable without a bra on given my chest size.  I needed to make sure I was as comfortable as possible in all other aspects since I was delivering med-free.
  • They told me to take everything off but I kept my sports bra on and was glad I did.
