Do you limit DC's milk intake?

So far we've only been a milk and water household. Which apparently is no problem for DS. He LOVES milk. I did try to offer him some cold hot chocolate (basically chocolate milk) and he wasn't too impressed. However, if I let him he'd easily drink a half gallon of milk a day! I try to limit it to 4-5 glasses, which is probably still too much (in a 7oz sippy). It doesn't seem to upset his stomach at all though.

Anyone have a milk-oholic? What else do you offer them once they've maxed out their milk allowance for the day? DS isn't terribly impressed with water and we've offered juice periodically, but we don't usually keep it in the house.  I suppose I just need to add it to the default shopping list, huh?

Re: Do you limit DC's milk intake?

  • I try to limit it to about 16oz. a day. More than that and we have some really gross diapers. He can have two glasses of watered-down apple juice after his nap, if he wants. The rest of the time it's water.

  • Pedi told us to continue to offer between 16-24 oz of milk/day.  DD loves milk too. I give her approx 20-24 oz, but not with meals, she gets it afterward (or she'd fill up on milk and not eat).  The rest of the day she gets water. Juice is only a treat for her, so she only gets offered milk or water. She doesn't love water, but she drinks it when she's thirsty because she knows

  • Wow- he loves his milk! DD has a small glass w/ lunch at school and then a small glass for dinner. She also likes yogurt and cheese so I feel like she gets her calcium. But I think if she tried to guzzle milk all the time I would definitely limit the intake- everything in moderation :)

  • Yes, DD loves milk!  I'm kind of glad though because she doesn't eat anything else that has a lot of protein besides peanut butter (and that's only once in awhile).  She does get a glass of milk at breakfast...a couple of small juice glasses of milk at lunch, and a couple of juice glasses full of milk at dinner.  She would drink it all day if we let her (just like juice) so we limit it and then she drinks water the rest of the time.
  • Oh ya, DS only gets milk with meals. All other times we offer water if he wants something. Usually by dinnertime though he's restricted to just water. I think milk is becoming a comfort thing sometimes though too. He's a little on edge when he wakes up from his afternoon nap and usually wants his milk with his snack right away.

  • My daughter is a total milk-a-holic.  She'd drink a carton a day if I let her.  Pedi told us to try to keep it between 16-18oz.  She probably drinks a little more than that, though...about 20 oz per day.  She drinks milk with her meals and then usually has two sippies of watered-down apple juice a day (mid-morning and after her nap)  She's not too keen on plain water, but she will drink it if she's thirsty.
  • YES! DD would live off of milk alone if we let her and she will also drink a half gallon a day if we let her have all she wants (which only happened once when DH and I weren't communicating about how much we'd given her)

Pedi said to limit her to 30oz - so we give her 3-4 sippies of milk first thing in the morning, before and after nap when she's at home or after school on days she goes, and before bed. She can not have milk with meals or she would not eat anything.

If she's having a bad day or is sick and whining a lot for milk I will water down the milk so that it's half water and that allows me to give her an "extra" cup of milk without increasing the amount she's really getting. (side note: if she's got an upset stomach, pedi told me to buy lactose-free milk while she's sick because it's easier to digest and I don't have to deny DD her favorite comfort food)

She does drink water and juice too - her "juice" is 50-75% water so I don't feel too bad about giving it to her. She drinks water better when it's out of special cups, either sports bottles or animal shaped sippies like the seasonal ones they sell at Target (a penguin shaped straw cup for example).

Because she is pretty skinny and loves milk so much, pedi had us keep her on whole milk for an extra year (until 3).

  • I try to limit DS to around 16 ounces a day. Otherwise I give him water and on occasion as a treat I let him have 4-6 ounces of juice (OJ and apple).

Seriously, all a child needs is milk and water. But you don't want to give too much because that fills them up and then they don't eat as much.

  • My DS was like yours when he drank out of a sippy. Now that he drinks out of a cup he drinks maybe 12 oz. a day.

  • My 20 month old is so a milkaholic.  She gets a sippy cup (7 oz that I never fill to the top) filled 3 times a day max and during the week when she gets milk during the day, I only fill it twice since I know what she drinks at daycare.  Other than that, I give her a straw cup of water (have one filled for each girl at all times).  We don't do juice often although at daycare they get juice with one meal and the rest of the time it is water or milk and on the weekends, we do a small glass of OJ with breakfast.  I have noticed that when I put my 20 months old milk in a regular glass, not a sippy, she drinks less.  I am giving her until her 2nd b-day and then all sippy's are gone from my house and it will be straw cups or regular cups (which she uses wonderful) only and then I don't think it will be an issue.  She really does drink a lot of liquid in a day so I don't worry but she does get constipated if she has too much milk.
