Should I Take Clomid?

It was a good news/bad news day. Good news is that my HSG showed "all clear". Bad news is that my day 3 blood work came back with border line numbers that indicate low ovarian reserve:

FSH 11.9
Estradiol 49.7

My doctor suggests Clomid for the next cycle, but I know that I ovulate--it just is late in my cycle and with a widely varying LP (8-15 days).

I will ask her about this, but right now I am just trying to learn as much as possible so I know what questions to ask.

Re: Should I Take Clomid?

  • I'm not going to tell you whether or not you should take clomid.  But I will tell you that it may help you ovulate earlier and that that could help you get pregnant.  Will your doctor provide monitoring?  Are you seeing an OB or RE?

  • Honestly, with the FSH numbers you have I would be a little more agresssive then clomid at this point. Yes, with a high FSH level you can ovulate, but the quality of the eggs you are releasing may not be very good.

I am AMA and it was suggested to me to skip clomid and go directly to injectable IUI because of egg quality issues, even though my FSH levels were okay for my age.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

Hearing about earlier ovulation is exactly the kind of info I was looking for, thanks. I am seeing an OB/GYN right now.  The plan is to repeat the Day #3 labs then take 100mg of Clomid from day #5 - Day #9, then repeat the FSH level on Day#10.

Thanks for sharing. It is so hard to sort through the options and make the best choice!

    AMA- against medical advice?

  • It sounds like you are doing the Clomid Challenge Test (https://www.infertilityspecialist.com/female_infertility_tests_clomid_challenge.htm) to see how your FSH looks on Day 10 after being "challenged" with Clomid.  This will give your dr. a better idea of your egg quality/ovarian reserve.  With borderline numbers like that, I would probably agree with the previous poster and recommend skipping Clomid and moving onto injectables and see how you respond to those.  Working with an RE would probably be good - they could also measure your antral follicle count and AMH, which are also indicators of ovarian reserve and functioning.  Knowing the results of all of those tests (and seeing how you respond to injectables) would give an RE a better idea of what your next steps should be.  Just my opinions!  I wish you the best on your journey.
