Re: anyone have mirena or paragard???

  • Pros - don't have to think about it at all.  No pills to take.  Lighter periods.

Cons - bled for a few weeks (lightly) at first, severe contraction-like cramps (unusual side effect - likely wont happen to you)

Despite my issues, I would totally give it a try.  All of my friends who have IUD's love them.

  • I have paragard. I basically love it b/c it has no hormones. I don't do well with hormones, they make me wacky. On the down side it does make my period heavier and a little longer, but personally I love it.

  • I've had my Paraguard for only 1 cycle so far.  I love love love not having to think about it.  I love not having different hormones going on...I feel so much better than when I was on the Pill.

After insertion, like the same day, I had major cramping!  I was glad I didn't go back into work that day.  I had minor cramping and spotting for about a week afterward.  My first period after was heavier than normal and I had cramps.  However, it was nothing more than I could handle.  So far, so good and I recommend it.

  • I have the Mirena.

I've had 2 or 3 pp periods since insertion (at 6 wks pp).  I weaned DD at 8.5 months.  My periods have been light light!  I'm talking more like blood tinged discharge for 2 or 3 days and that's it.  I don't need more than a panty liner if I need anything at all.  I don't know if this is normal.

I had some cramping on insertion and that day.  Not horrible but I did take and ibuprofen right before the insertion.  I had light bleeding for a few weeks (actually maybe only 2) and that was it.  I love not thinking about my BC and the low dose hormones are working fairly well for me.  The only thing I'm not a fan of: I have light acne on my chin and hairline since I'm on the lower dose hormones.  It's much better than before I was on BC but I had no acne on the BCP.  A compromise I can live with.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  • I have the paragard and I LOVE it! I've had it for about 8 months now and aside from a little more cramping and a little longer periods (mine were only 2 days when I was on the pill) I have nothing bad to say about it.

  • paragard: I like the efficacy of it and not having to remember to do anything. I don't like having a period every month. PP period seems longer and heavier than it ever was. hard to say if it's due to the IUD or just b/c i'm post partum.

grass is always greener, but if I could pick over again I'd do mirena and POAS monthly with dollar store pregnancy tests just to be sure I wasn't pregnant since you eventually stop getting your period usually with mirena.

  • Paragard

Pros- I'm not pregnant, forget it is there

Cons- heavier periods, don't completely trust it after seeing a few IUD pregnancies on here
