Working for 40 weeks?

Hi all!  I'm curious...

Do you plan to work until you deliver?

What do you do for a living?

If you plan to go out early, why?

Or, if you have no choice and have gone out early, why?

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income?

I am a nurse and I planned to work until the end, but as of today I am out per my OB. She doesn't want me working 12 hr. shifts anymore, being in such a high-stress environment, or standing for long periods of time because I have had borderline hypertension and she is worried. I am covered by STD for now until I deliver, and then for 6-8 weeks post-partum and after that, will use my vacation time. Tell me your story!

Re: Working for 40 weeks?

  • Do you plan to work until you deliver?  Yes, or until the Doc tells me I can't work anymore.. which, knowing my luck, won't happen.

What do you do for a living?  Operations Specialist/Admin Assistant for a Marketing Company.

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income?  No, no STD.  We have some money saved, but will mostly be living off of DH's income.  He was recently allowed to start working OT, which will help TONS but times will be tough while I'm out of work.

  • My tentative leave date is Jan 8th and my due date is Jan 10th.  That may change as we get closer to the due date, but thats my plan.

Then I will get 6-8 weeks STD, and the rest of the 12 weeks will be unpaid.

  • My original plan was to work up until delivery.

    I work in IT

Doc took me off of work because of bad pelvic pain/pressure and swelling.

And yes I have short term disability.

  • Do you plan to work until you deliver? No, I will work until 37 weeks.

What do you do for a living? Director of Development for a private secondary school.

If you plan to go out early, why? A number of reasons: it's during the holidays, I want time off to relax and get ready before baby, I don't want to work when I will potentially be at my most uncomfy, etc.

Or, if you have no choice and have gone out early, why?

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income? For the time off before baby, it's mostly paid holidays and comp time. Time off after baby (I am taking 12/18-6/6 off) will be a combo of sick time, vacation and STD.

  • Do you plan to work until you deliver?  Yep, as long as I am not absolutely miserable.

What do you do for a living?  H.S. English teacher

If you plan to go out early, why?  N/A

Or, if you have no choice and have gone out early, why?  N/A

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income?  I am covered by short term disability and we have some money saved.

  • Do you plan to work until you deliver?

Yes....as long as that's possible and there are no big suprises within the next few weeks!

What do you do for a living?

    Administrative Assistant

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income?

I've only been working part-time but I usually work at least 30 hrs per week. So my workplace is paying me for 20 hrs a week during the 6 weeks I'm off...I'm very lucky. We saved to cover DH's 2 weeks off.

  • I am also a nurse and I had planned on working until the end but I'm not going to lie.... working is getting harder... I feel like humpty dumpty somedays waddling in and out of rooms on the floor!! I want to work until the end because I want more time after for when the baby comes home. I have short term disability but I really don't know if it will cover me if I'm forced out early for the 12 weeks I want. Do you know? I know I have STD for 6 weeks but then I have PTO like you, would I have to go back earlier?

I really hope I can make until I deliver!

  • I am a lab assistant and plan on working up until my due date unless complications arise. I didn't sign up for STD when I first started because I just wasn't thinking, but did sign up for it the next time open enrollment came around.  Unfortunately that was after I was pregnant so I won't be covered by it for my maternity leave. I have been very dedicated to getting enough saved up to cover all of my bills for the time I am taking off though.  It helps though this time around not to have to by all the big stuff.

  • I was planning on working until I deliver, but I'm going to work until my due date.  Actually, I'm due the Monday after Thanksgiving, so I'm making the Wednesday after Thanksgiving my last day.  My job isn't stressful or anything (I do PR and communications at a big church), but I thought it would be nice to have some down time before LO arrives (I'm assuming I'll go past my due date).  It'll probably be a long time before I get alone/down time.  Years probably!  I'm just using FMLA and PTO that I have left.  We budgeted how to live on just one salary, so the money thing isn't an issue.

Do you plan to work until you deliver? Yes

What do you do for a living? I work in the admitting department at a hospital; Insurance verification, billing, registration, etc..

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income?

We accrue our Paid Time Off (PTO) and Extended Illness Time (EIT) by the hours we work, so I've been saving and saving my hours since I got my BFP.. but with illness (damn swine flu!) and previous engagments (honeymoon!) I did use some of the time..

I'm hoping that by the time January rolls around I will have at least 6 weeks combined PTO & EIT.. more would be GREAT!

  • Do you plan to work until you deliver? That's the plan. But I'm a brand new employee with no benefits yet, so I don't really have a choice.

What do you do for a living? ICU nurse

If you plan to go out early, why? The only way I'll go out early is if it's a medical necessity....though I would love to stop around 38 weeks, because 12 hour shifts are BRUTAL on a pregnant body.

Or, if you have no choice and have gone out early, why?

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income? Not covered by STD, FMLA, nada. I've only been employed for about a month, so legally they owe me nothing. DH and I have been living off of his income for quite some time while I was in nursing school, so fortunately it won't affect us one bit when I'm not working.

If you have a note from your doctor which they should have no problem giving you if you are having a tough time working (understandably so, it is very physical and just hard to bend and twist and stand, etc!) then that does not count toward your 12 weeks maternity leave. They are 2 separate things, not being able to work for medical reasons, and then because you have a baby. So short term should cover you prior to going out and then for your 6 or 8 weeks after you deliver. It will only cover you with a doctor's note, though. That is how it is for me. HTH!

  • I teach in college and today was my first day missing class. I've been having contractions and back labor since Sunday and just couldn't pull it off today. I have been commenting on the essays they sent me electronically this am between contractions. I don't have any maternity leave and am only going to be able to miss about 5 classes, so I am in a very different boat than most of you ladies.
  • No - I'm stopping at 38 weeks and I can't wait to be done! I work in finance and the stress and long hours are starting to take their toll. I have 4 weeks vacation saved up and then 12 weeks maternity leave all at full pay so I'm really lucky there. I just hope that LO makes an appearance sooner rather than later so I'm not sitting at home for a month with no baby!
  • Do you plan to work until you deliver? That was the plan until 3 weeks ago, when the Dr. took me off work for my numb and swollen hands!

What do you do for a living? I work in Nurtritional Services at a hospital and deliver trays to the patients!  (It's only 4 hour shifts, but its all on my feet!!!

If you plan to go out early, why? That wasn't the plan, but thats what happened at 37 1/2 weeks!

Or, if you have no choice and have gone out early, why?  Dr. took me off work because of my numb and swollen hands and I wouldn't be able to do my job if I tried!  I can barely hold a pen!

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income? No short term disablity at the hospital, I had it last year when I was teaching, but took the year off.  I have very few sick and vacation hours that will used for my time off (I'm getting my last paycheck on Friday) then I will have nothing.  I will return to work on 1/5/10.  We had more money saved up until we had to redo the bathroom and put a new roof on the house and DH has been on and off unemployment almost my entire pregnancy.  Things will be tight for a while, but we'll be livin off love!  And hopefully DH's job is picking up so he will back to work!

  • Do you plan to work until you deliver? I am working up until 10 days before my due date.

What do you do for a living? I am an ASL Facilitator, a fancy title for an educational assistant with ASL (American Sign Language).

If you plan to go out early, why? I work half an hour outside of the city, and don't want to risk a blizzard if I go a couple days early.

Or, if you have no choice and have gone out early, why?

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income? Up in Canada we have one year paid maternity leave. It's only about half your wage, but you can take a year off. I am taking just over a year because when my mat leave is up, there will only be 2 weeks of school before Christmas break, so it doesn't make much sense for me to go back, then have another 2 weeks off.

  • Well I wasn't planning on it..I am landscape designer and I spend most of my day outside on my feet..we happened to slow down in September so I kinda had some time off and was planning on stopping in October..Well we got two huge projects in so I went back to work and will be working until at least Thanksgiving..I am not covered by any std bcuz I am a subcontractor and don't make a regular check or have insurance or anything that would cover it..i did want to stop kinda bcuz we would be slow at that time and i wouldn't be missing out on too much..
  • Do you plan to work until you deliver??- yes? What do you do for a living?- ER doc - Wish I could take time off early. ?The long hours and being on my feet all day are starting to take a toll on me. ?Not to mention all the sick patients make me a little nervous sometimes. Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income??- I'm taking 6 weeks leave which will be paid time off so it won't affect our income at this point. ??
  • I plan to work up until the day that I either "pop" or my doc tells me that I need to stay home.  I am sheduling my maternity leave to start on Feb. 1st - I am due Feb. 3rd.  My doc said that he will not let me go longer than 1 week before he induces me so at the most I may be home a week before little one arrives if I end up going overdue.

I have 12 weeks of 100% paid maternity leave and I plan to use an additional 20 days of vacation to make up for another month.  I plan to stay home for 4 full months before returning to work.

ETA:  I am a Legal Secretary.

Do you plan to work until you deliver?

I was originally planning on doing this, but when I saw my OB last week, she said that due to my job description, she wanted me working no later than 38 or 39 weeks. My last day will be at 38w3d.

What do you do for a living?

I'm the manager of a retail home store.

If you plan to go out early, why?

I can no longer lift 45 pounds, bend, move furniture, climb 15 ft ladders, be on my feet for 10 hours a day, etc. I was doing really well up until about 36 weeks, and then it just got too difficult to do most of that. I am pretty much useless at work right now LOL.

Or, if you have no choice and have gone out early, why?

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income?

STD will cover me from week 38 on, and 6-8 weeks post-partum. It's not at full pay, so we've been saving as much as possible to make up for the difference in income.

  • Do you plan to work until you deliver? yes ma'm! unless doc says i can't

What do you do for a living? Accounting and i'm exhausted!

If you plan to go out early, why? nope

Or, if you have no choice and have gone out early, why? n/a

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income? not covered b/c my work does not pay into sdi. we have money saved for the time im out but i'm also using vac/sick leave to supplement.

  • Do you plan to work until you deliver?  I did until this weekend....Nov 25th will be my last day because I'm due 10 days later, and I won't want to go back to work after having 4 days off for Thanksgiving (Thur, Fri, Sat, Sun). The doc thinks I might deliver early, anyway.

What do you do for a living?  Physical Therapist...on my feet 8-9 hrs/day, 5 days/wk.

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income?  I am covered by short term disability for 6 weeks (3 of those unpaid waiting period), saved PTO/sick leave of 4 weeks, and the rest unpaid. DH has been saving $ to prepare for this.

  • Do you plan to work until you deliver?  I had every intention/hope of working up to about 36 or 37 weeks but my midwife wrote me out of work last week at 30 weeks.

What do you do for a living?  ER nurse

Or, if you have no choice and have gone out early, why?  When I am really active I have a lot of contractions that were beginning to get pretty strong.  I also was having this recurrent pain in my belly in one spot when I was very active.  Our department is busy and I was not able to keep up when I was having the pain and contractions.  Also, my DD was born at 35 weeks and being at risk for PTL, it just seemed like the safest decision to go out early.

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income?  I will be covered by part time disability for approx 75% of my salary up until the delivery and for 12 weeks after.  I will supplement with PTO/Holiday/Sick pay.  We also have a little bit of savings we can dip into if needed.

  • Do you plan to work until you deliver? Yes.

What do you do for a living? I work for state government as a processing assistant at our Division of Motor Vehicles.

If you plan to go out early, why? the only reason I might leave earlier is because everyone here is sick with one thing or another and my DH is extremely paranoid.

Or, if you have no choice and have gone out early, why? n/a

Will you be covered by short-term disability or do you have money saved? If neither, how do you plan to make up for the loss of income? I get FMLA, which is unpaid leave. I have 5 weeks of saved sick/vacation days so I can get paid for most of the time I'm out. Otherwise, I'm just trying to save as much as I can until I'm out of work. I'm also signing up for Voluntary Shared Leave-- where other state employees can donate time to help people who are out of leave so they can still have a paycheck. I had planned on signing up for disability (not included in benefits) -- but found out the week I was to enroll that I was already PG and it wouldn't be covered. I am enrolled for future pregnancies, though.
