Preemies

need some advice please

here it is

addition: our nanny has a lot of experience and is sweet, but she seems to struggle a little with what Andrew needs. I know that he is more difficult then the average kid (he's finicky and will NOT eat or sleep if he has to burp, and he always has about 180000 burps after each bottle) but still.  You preemie moms can relate to that...

I dont know if I"m being to picky or being reasonable.  thanks!

Re: need some advice please

  • I think I would call part way through the day each day to see how much he's eaten/slept - if not much, I'd suggest the burping.  Perhaps once she witnesses it working, she will make sure to do it the next time?

  • I do not think you are being picky.  I think a mom, especially a preemie mom, can relate.  I am uber picky (ok, let's be real...anal) when it comes to my son's care.  He stays with my MIL on T and R when I work.  She was in the NICU with me 5 days a week, so she knows all that I have been thru and what makes him tick.  I don't think you are too picky, but it may be hard to find someone that will care for him like you unless she is you or has been there like you.

    ((hugs))

  • B/f getting a new one, I'd sit down and talk to her about how important it is to get all his burps up. DS also is VERY gassy and needs help there, so I can relate. Some ppl think they get a burp and he's done and I have to tell he's got 4 more Smile. Make this a special conversation, not a comment tacked on to the end of the day. That way it'll be clear how important it is to you. If she still doesn't respond, start looking for a new one.
  • I like the idea of checking in mid-day.  But no IMO you are being a good mom not overly picky.  I would do the same thing.

  • I was a nanny and a preschool teacher for about 5 years...my question is how long has this nanny been with you? I was with the little boy I use to nanny for over 3 years and I knew exactly what all his little ticks and moods meant. If she hasn't been with you long, she may just be getting adjusted. I would show her exactly how you would like her to burp your son. I also second the binder of do's and don'ts and calling to check in mid-day. I would alos suggest having her spend a Saturday with you and your LO....thos way she can observe exactly how she should react to different behaviors. I often did this before I would take on a new child to care for. My favorite moms were always the ones who gave me lots of instructions, that way I knew I was doing a good job!

    Thanks!

She has been here for 3 months.  So not a really long time, but long enough IMO...

I was feeling like I was giving her so many instuctions (written and oral) but I think I'm going to put together a binder spelling out everything.

We did have 2 days of observation / carryover when she started, but maybe we need to do this again.

    Good idea to check-in mid-day.

    Thanks!

  • What happens when she struggles? Does she freak and call you? Or just says when you get home she didn't know what to do?
  • I don't think you are being picky, and it sounds like you have done a lot to help her already...

I would give her another month or so, and let her know you are concerned that things aren't working out, so she can try and rectify the situation.

I nannied for a long time, and always appreciated parents who gave clear and specific instructions. Good luck! I hope everything works out!

  • 3 months is enough time to get to know your LO...especially if she is watching him daily. I would let her know how you are feeling, do another observation and give it 2 weeks. I would also, and this may be extreme, get a nanny cam. This way you can really see what is going on when you are away.

She doesn't freak out or call me...when I get home she'll say "he just didn't want to sleep" or "he wasn't interested in his bottle at that time"
