Question for CA Ladies from a 2nd Tri'er

Hi There!! I am just curious as to when you ladies stopped working, and how it went when you told your doc that you were ready to be done with work. When you said "uncle", did they just go ahead and take you out without a fight?

The reason I ask is because I work at a high stress desk job, and I know that I will want to be taken out at four weeks before my due date, which is the earliest that I can if I want to get paid for it...

:) Thanks in advance!! :)

  • i worked until i went into labor with #1 and i'll do the same this time too.  that was my preference because i like working and wanted to be here.

but my OB told me i could stop whenever i was ready.  he offered to write me a note, lol.  there was no fight involved.

  • Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but under FMLA you don't need an excuse. They give you the 4 weeks prior if you want them, but they will be deducted for time off after. Just meet with your boss and let them know that this is the plan. If you are leaving a month in advance they need to prepare for your departure.

I personally will be working til I pop. My job is low stress, sit on my bum, and I would prefer to save that time afterwards.

  • My OB will sign you out of work when you want...within reason. I'm starting leave 4 weeks prior to my due date because I don't pay into STD and my work's LTD benefits don't start kicking in until I'm out of work for 40 calendar days. If I work until my due date I end up screwing myself with no paid leave and a month less I can take off. My OB did mention in his experience, women who work full time and take off early end up going crazy at home...I know I will.
  • We don't pay into STD here either. Our company pays for it, so its not state mandated until FMLA, which will kick in after my 6-8 week recovery after the birth of our son. Our STD policy states that we can go out up to four weeks prior to the due date, but I have to be released by my doctor. I don't think there will be an issue if I walk in there the day of my 36 week appointment and tell her I'm toast (because I know I will be at that point... like I said, high stress, 6am-2:30pm hours). Also, if I don't take those four weeks, I lose them. I can't carry them over to after the birth. I'm just curious as to what your docs said when you indicated you were done.

  • I was working at a restaurant when I was PG with my 1st. I started having pain around week 34 and I was put on disability, no questions asked. I know that disability did not cover the first 2 weeks I was out.

Ask your doctor about it now and explain your work's LTD. What doctor is going to force you to work?
  • I left 4 weeks before due date which was 2 weeks earlier than I had intended.  I just told my doc that I needed a note and he asked for what date and that was it.  No explanation nneeded.  My doc is really cool though.  Just talk to him/her and tell them.  Just make sure you take your short term disability before your FMLA.  STD pays while you're preggo and for 4 weeks after and FMLA pays for time off with baby.  Check out www.edd.ca.gov for specifics.
  • I just had my last day of work last Thursday....at 30 weeks.  I am a nurse in a pretty busy ER and it was just becoming too much.  I was having contractions like crazy when we were really busy (which is all the time), and I was getting these intermittent pains in my belly that were really sharp and painful.  My midwife signed me out without a problem.  She told me at the beginning of my pregnancy that I would know whan I was done and to listen to my body.  I am just sending off my paperwork to the state for disability, and from what I have heard, there should be no problem with it getting approved, but it takes a few weeks for the first check to arrive.
