Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone else still on formula?

We are doing the toddler soy formula, and I'm so nervous to move to soy milk. Maybe it's because my kid is the pickiest everything - he doesn't eat hardly any food, he won't take anything out of a sippy, etc. At least I know he'll drink formula out of a bottle. ANyone else - I'm starting to get self-conscious shaking up his bottles in front of others.

  • We're mixing whole milk with formula right now.  DD is on hypoallergenic formula so I was nervous about her reaction to milk.  And she REFUSED milk so we've been mixing - at first just a little milk with formula, then half and half, and now more milk than formula.  We were waiting until our trip away was over (just got back yesterday) to wean off bottles.  It totally freaks me out because although DD does drink out of her sippy -- I am scared she won't get enough fluids if we give up the bottle.  Sigh.

  • you could always mix the bottles up ahead of time... no one will know what's in the bottle, just keep them on ice when you leave the house.

Tell me about it...I know some people are of the belief that a kid won't starve/dehydrate themselves and they will eventually give in if you stop offering, but I really think my kid would be that one special example where he would totally starve rather than try sometihng new.

  • DS is still on formula and he'll be 15 months in a week.  He went through a 3 month period of where he would refuse to eat.  It was a struggle to get him to eat anything, even foods he previously loved.  We think it was because all his molars were coming in.  Pedi recommended to keep him on formula until he starts eating better again.

He just recently started eating better and trying new foods.  If he continues to eat well in the next few weeks, I think I'll start the transition to milk by slowly introducing it in his bottle with formula.  I've previously tried giving him straight milk in his sippy and he doesn't like it.  Not only that but he doesn't drink well out of his sippy yet - he drinks a little but mostly he just chews on it.

I don't plan on taking away the bottle until after christmas and when he drinks out of his sippy better.

  • Yes!  Brendan was almost fully on regular food and his reflux came fully back.  We are now fully back on formula until the reflux is back under control.
  • Yes! I was going to post something similar. I'm glad we're not alone. DS only has two teeth and is picky with textures. He'll eat cream of wheat, pasta and peas, but that's about it. And some days he only wants a few bites. At his 12 month appointment, he was really only eating baby food (other than puffs as a snack), in addition to BM and formula. I talked to the pedi. and together we agreed to keep him on BM/formula until he had made the transition from baby food to table food. He'll be 14 months old in a few days, and he's still drinking about 24 oz. of BM/formula a day. As he starts to add in more table foods and makes the transition completely from baby food, we'll start the transition to milk. I'm hoping by his 15 month appointment he'll be completely on table food and off formula. I'm still BFing, mostly because he's a big comfort nurser and wants to BF all the time, and plan to continue BFing through cold & flu season.

He also just started drinking out of a sippy, and still only takes a few sips. I will not take the bottle away, regardless of what's in it, until he's drinking a lot more out of a sippy cup.

  • DD still gets some formula at bedtime if she didn't eat well that day.  I refuse to buy another can though.

  • DS is still on formula.  He has milk/soy intolerances, combined with some crazy reflux and a horrible eater.  GI is completely comfortable with him being on formula for at least 6 more months.  We are going to try and slowly introduce dairy and if that goes well we will try tranistioning to milk around 15 months.  DS still does not get near enough calories from food.  If he misses a bottle during the day he is up wanting to eat in the middle of the night to make up lost calories.
