Has anyone switched OB's?

Hey ladies. I am doing some research and found another great practice that delivers at my preferred hospital. They seem to be more "on top of things" like wanting to find the HB sooner, a sooner 1st u/s, etc. I was thinking of calling up there and seeing what my options could be. Is it bad to switch Doctors? I have only gone for one appt to my previous Doc and just had blood work done, and went over my health history. Any thoughts?

Re: Has anyone switched OB's?

  • I have switched doctors twice. I really want to go somewhere I feel very comfortable. I don't think there is anything wrong with switching doctors.

  • Was it a smooth process for you? Or was it a major headache?

  • This is YOUR body, YOUR pregnancy and YOUR baby... you do what is going to make you happy, healthy and sane! I switched during my pregnancy with DD and never regretted it!

  • I'm switching OBs.

I see no harm in it, as your patient files can be requested and transferred to your new OB. If you have more confidence in the new office and they accept your insurance, go for it.

  • It was a very smooth process for me. When I decide to switch, I just call my current doctor and have them release all my records to the new office. Then I schedule an appointment for after I expect them to have my records. The biggest pain is getting your records released and it is just a matter of signing a piece of paper.
  • I've been thinking about switching too.  I have an appointment this Wednesday and if my doctor's bedside manner doesn't improve, I am going to switch.  Let me know if you decide to switch and how it goes!!

  • I don't think there's anything wrong with switching docs. You should do whatever to make sure you're happy and comfortable. I have to switch docs at 30 weeks because we're stationed in Italy and the base clinic wants me to start seeing the Italian doc who will be my OB from 30 on. I'm not exactly happy about it, but whatever. Lol. Good luck!
  • I switched doctors too. Everything went smoothly, just had to sign a paper to get my records released. I am very pleased with my new dr. so far and have not regretted switching yet. I think being comfortable is the most important thing!
  • I switched from an OB to a MW after my first (history/bloodwork) appointment.  It was easy-peasy.  I just made an appointment with the MW and had the OB office forward them all my records.  The MW was thrilled because it meant that at our first meeting with her she could tell us about the bloodwork results and not have to "do all that boring work" herself.

It is in no way "bad" to switch doctors.  If you've found another practice that better fits with what you want for your pregnancy/birth, I think you absolutely should switch.  If the new practice is taking patients and is covered by your insurance, there is NO REASON not to change.  The old practice will not be offended, and you will not have to explain yourself to anyone.  Just call up their records department and have them send you a release form to forward your file to the new practice once you have an appt. there.
  • I have my first appointment today with Boston doctors. I live about an hour and a half away from where I work. Out where I live, they won't see me until December. I thought I would start in the city and then do a 'transfer apt' out where I live in a month or so . From what I undestand, you just need to have the first doc fax or send everything to the second doc.

One tip: Never take anything for granted. If you told something important to doc 1 definitely tell it to doc 2- I find that many docs start from scratch with you and don't spend too much time on reading your old records (this is from my experience with reg. docs not obgyn).

  • I switched back to my usual OB before I found out I was pg this time. I always loved him, but hes 30 min away...just wanted something closer. I should have went with my "gut feelings" because 3 days after I mc with the 2nd pg, the "new dr" called to confirm my appt for that week (which would have been my 1st us)... I have now went back to my old dr and feel so much better about everything! So just go with what you feel and what your confortable with! GL with everything!
