Success after IF

Do you wake up your baby to eat?

Yesterday my in-laws were here, and held Jake pretty much all day, making him nice and cozy and thus going for longer sleep stretches during the day. He ate a lot when he woke up, but overall had fewer feedings than he usually does. When he usually has 7 or 8 feedings in a 24 hr. period, he only ate 5 times yesterday. Is this a problem? Should I have woken him up to eat more frequently?

Re: Do you wake up your baby to eat?

  • My pedi said the only time you wake a baby to eat is if they aren't back to their birth weight. If Jake was hungry, he would have woken up.

  • We woke up DD until she was 8 weeks old.  She got back to her birth weight early on (9 days old), but she was still really small -- she didn't gain additional weight until she was 5 weeks old.  I pumped, and DH fed her.  We did it at 10:00, 1:00, 4:00, and 7:00.  It totally depends on the child though; we just wanted her to get 8 full bottles a day and it took us 24 hours to do it since each took 90+ minutes.  Good luck!!! :)

  • I only woke Lucas up until he gained his birth weight back.  He is gaining weight like crazy so I don't have any concerns on that front.
  • I do wake him during the day if it's been more than 4 hours in the hopes that he'll save his longer stretches of sleeping/not eating for nighttime.  I think it kinda works.  :)
  • We woke Ben up every 3 hours until he was about 2 months old.  We then fed him every three hours during the day and let him sleep longer stretches at night.  He didn't gain weight well at first because of reflux.  He was only 5 oz above his birth weight at 1 month, but by 2 months he'd gained 3 lbs.

  • If he's still eating about the same quantity but in fewer feedings, I wouldn't worry but if he's eating the same as he wouldve eaten in 3 hr stretches, I would hesitate to do that.
