Anyone do anything to get LO "ready" for daycare?

I worry that LO will have a hard adjustment period at daycare if he goes in with no kind of transitioning. He'll sleep in a room with 7 other infants and the playroom is right next door with the door open so I imagine he'll have a rough time sleeping for a while. Should I start slowly introducing him to more noise during his naps? Also, I give him LOTS of attention during the day but at daycare he'll need to spend some time alone. I do try to give him independent play, but he doesn't like it much. Any tips on preparing LO for the change? Or is this something that we'll just have to deal with when the time comes? I know I'll have a harder time with the change :(

  • I had the same concerns you have but I didn't do anything special to prepare LO for daycare.  We only have her in daycare two days a week so she doesn't have to "put up" with the craziness too much!  She DOES seem really tired on the days she goes to daycare and I suspect she doesn't nap as well due to all the noise but there's not much I can do about that.  I think she has adjusted well on her own.  GL!

  • I took DD on Wednesday-Friday the week before. Wed. I stayed with her for about an hour, played with her with the toys, let the teachers hold her. Thursday I stayed for a little then left her for about 2 hours. Then Friday I dropped her off for a half-day. This way she wasn't in total shock that coming Monday.

Hmmm, good idea! I'm not sure I can do this, but I can try popping in 1x or 2x a day for a few days until he's adjusted. Or maybe this will make him more upset? Oy vay :)

  • I'm sure they wouldn't mind. Just call ahead and ask them if it's okay. Plus it gave me time to drop off her things and explain her feeding and napping routines. I wouldn't of have time to do it the Monday I started back at work.

Also, sleep with LO's sheets and blankets that you are going to bring to daycare - this way it will gave your scent on it.

I don't think it would be a good idea to drop in on your LO because I think he would be excited to see you, then you'd leave him again. If it makes you feel better, drop by, but don't let him see you.

  • We decided to have a day nanny come to the house.  I'm nervous about the flu season - it's very bad in Massachusetts and there is a huge shortage of even regular vaccines never mind H1N1.  Our flu shot appts for the regular one were postponed for a nother month.

In any event, we're going to start the nanny 2 weeks prior to me going back to work to get her used to it.  They recommend doing half days at first for day care.
