NBR: If you have dogs...

Do you keep their collars on 24/7? Or do you just put one on if they are going outside? or for a walk?

We keep our dogs collars on 24/7 and they are used to them completely. They once got out of the yard and their tags have our name and phone number on it so that way they could be returned to us. Luckily we found them a few hours after they got out, but it's made me paranoid to let them outside with out their collars on, and since they are in and out like a 5 year old in the summer, it's just easier to keep the collar on all the time

Re: NBR: If you have dogs...

  • We give her "collar free time" so we can scratch her neck- plus I imagine it just feels good to have it off sometimes! We only do this when we are home with her though, and we put it back on after like an hour or so.

  • She only wears hers when we go for walks...last week I thought I lost her and freaked out but she was with DH at the store :) She doesn't mind wearing it but it rubs all the fur off her neck and it annoys me when we;re sleeping.

  • Big dog - on all the time plus he is chipped.

Medium dog - off at night because he shakes his head when he stands up and rattles his tags so loud he wakes us up, also chipped

  • We have greyhounds so we walk them with martingale collars. In the house they have loose tag collars that would come off if they were to get stuck on something (so they don't choke). When our dogs were crated and in their crates with the martingales our one dogs collar got stuck in the bars of the crate and he had to pull out of it - luckily he was able to. Since the, no normal collars in the house.
  • we usually put it on before we let her outside but if she's in for the night we will take it off. The tags jingle which is annoying when we're trying to sleep or relax, plus I imagine she enjoys having some collar free time.
  • Both dogs wear theirs all the time. If the tag noise bothers you, take a rubberband (I use a hair band) and tie them up. Problem solved! I love that easy solution.

  • Our dog never wears his, only for walks. He never runs away either tho. I leave the gate open all the time, I know horrible, but he is a really good dog.
  • on all the time-easy to grab them when people come or when we want to get them inside quick.   they have the implanted tag things.
  • She has it on 99% of the time. We take it off when we give her a bath and normally wash it too so she gets 3-4 hours without it. About once a month I take it off and give her a break overnight.
  • She keeps hers on 24-7 unless it is bath time, then it comes off.  Her collar is pretty loose so I don't think it bugs her too much.  I just feel better since she is a runner and I know if she ever got out of our yard she wouldn't come back.  As a second safety measure, she's microchipped too.
  • There is no way for my dog to get out of the yard (I don't think at least) because we are completely fenced in.  I do keep her collar on 24/7 though.  It's just easier for me to grab her if neccesary.  I also have a cat and sometimes my dog like to chase her (she plays ruff).  She is used to the collar at this point - so I don't see it as a big deal.  There are times that we will take off the collar for no particular reason.... random.

  • He wears a collar if we go to the vet and that is it. He is old and has no intention of running away. Plus I am outside with him when he goes out. He is not much of an outdoor dog except to go to the bathroom. He goes with us to In laws house and we don't collar him there either. He is very well behaved and really doesn't need a leash. We do collar and leash him at the vet becuase we have to.

  • We leave them on 24/7, but give them a bath or have water time at least once a month (more during the summer). During water time we take the collars off, but then they go right back on. They are microchipped, but I don't want to take the chance that we'll forget to put it back on or they'll get out without tags on.

  • Our dog only wears her collar if we take her somewhere (the vet, store, camping, etc) or we're on a walk.  We have a fenced in back yard so we don't even have her wear it on her when she's back there.  We do have her microchipped.

  • We usually have his collar off when he's inside... but we also have a fenced in yard and so there usually is no reason for him to wear a collar.

I don't think he minds wearing a collar but it just doesn't look comfortable to me. When I take it off I scratch his neck and he loves that. :)

  • At our last place, we had a dog door that our dogs used to go in and out when they pleased. However, they got out when the meter reader from the electric company forgot to close the gate all the way. They're both chipped, but weren't wearing collars, luckily the mailman wrangled them and shut the gate for us.

One of our dogs has passed away since, but I always keep a collar on in addition to his microchip. Not everyone knows to bring the dog into a vet or pound to have it scanned. This way the phone number is right there.  He's an indoor only dog now, so it doesn't really matter, but I think he looks more handsome in it lol

  • Ours only have their collars on when we walk them.  They spend most of their time in our fenced in yard, and we dont' have collars on them then.
  • His collar only comes off for a bath. I would HATE if I lost him, he came to me because he was found as a stray. :( I would hate if he ended up in a shelter again, poor baby.

  • Ours don't have them on anymore unless they are training or working.  DH is a dog trainer so both our dogs have been trained for protection, tracking, and service work.  To them having a collar on means they are working so we can't leave them on all the time anymore.  We got them microchiped in case they get out instead.
  • We have a lab and he has them on all the time. We have those little plastic "tag silencers" on the tags so they don't really make much noise. I think he actually misses it when we do take it off, he seems happy to see it when I bring it back out. :)

  • ours both (100lb and 50lb) haev them on all the time and are both microchipped.  We take them off for baths and to let them dry but they put them back on.  We usually wash them while the dogs are getting bathed also.  They don't seem to mind them, and actually go crazy and look pathetic when we take them off...its like being naked to them!!
  • our 60+ lab puppy always has her collar on now that she isn' crated, only off during baths and when we let her play in her puppy pool in the summer.  We aren't afraid that she would run, but easier to get a hold of her when she grabs something she is not supposed to have (she loves socks).... but my dog's a freak, when she was fixed she was crazy with excitment to wear the cone... even put it on afterwards as a treat for her

  • We keep Blitz's collar on her all the time.  The only times when she's not wearing it is just after a bath and if we're trying to watch a movie.  When she scratches it's very loud with the tags on it.  She's an escape artist and a loves to run, she's gotten out on numerous occasions, once when we weren't home and becasue of her tags, the people that found her were able to call us.  She also knows how open up the gate to our fenced in yard.  We also have her chipped.  My parents have an 11 year old lab that has always been a slug and she only wears a collar when they take her somewhere.

  • He only has it on for walks or when he is outside. Otherwise he has a free neck :)
  • Our dog only wears his on a walk.  Given he cannot escape from our condo unless he thinks of a way to climb out of a 3rd floor patio.
  • My lab used to get his collar off on his own and then "lose" it. Eventually he'd bring it back from who knows where. Our dogs have their harnesses on all the time expect when they go to bed at night. The harnesses have their names on and they are also chipped. They get their collars on when we take them somewhere in the car.

Our other dogs always had their collars on but had a habit of losing their tags, so the collars were almost pointless other than to say that they were someone's dog.
