NBR at all: old Rx?

sort of random, i know. this seems like the kind of thing a person should just know, but i've got no clue.

what are you supposed to do with old prescription drugs? or even old OTC drugs? i know you aren't supposed to flush them because they can contaminate the groundwater, but i'm thinking you aren't supposed to put them in the trash either.

I've taken old RX drugs back to the pharmacy or to the Dr's office. I've only had to do it a few times though.
