Pregnancy Books

Hi Ladies,

I was trying to figure out what pregnancy books I want to get and I was wondering if you had any suggestions or favorites?

Thanks!

Re: Pregnancy Books

  • My OB told me to stay away from "what to expect when you're expecting" because of the fear mongering.

I have the Mayo Clinic Guide to a healthy pregnancy and love it.

  • Crap I bought the *What to expect when your expecting book* last night.
  • I'm reading What to Expect.  There are just so many things in it that don't apply to me.  For instance I just skipped over a huge part about having an STD while pregnant.......

I'd love to hear some other recommendations.  I want to read Happiest Baby on the Block before the baby comes, but probably a little pater in my pregnancy.

  • I have both the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and the "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy." The What to Expect book has more of the emotional aspects of pregnancy (and a good Dad section), but the Mayo Clinic book has really good info on when you need to call the doctor or not. At the end of each monthly-chapter in the Mayo book, it lists symptoms you make have (spotting, pain, headache, etc) and a decision guide as to when you need to contact your doctor (immediately, within 24 hrs, or next visit).

So, I read both because they both have good points about them.

  • Not to mention a competitor on this site . . . but I love getting the www.babycenter.com weekly updates.  I still get them for DD and just signed up for the pregnancy updates again.

For books, I have Your Pregnancy, Week by Week.  It does have some fear mongering, too, but you'll learn to look past most of that as time goes on.

  • I haven't finished reading anything, but I'm currently reading 'Raising Baby Green' (saw the author speak yesterday) and have 'Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy' waiting for me at the library.  I've heard great things about both.

The Mayo Clinic one is the next on my list to read.

I did read 'What to Expect Before You're Expecting' and found it to be a little info. on a lot of topics, many of which didn't apply to me so I don't think I'll be trying the WTEWYE' version.

    TTC #2 since April 2012

    Year 1 - nothing

    Year 2 - two m/c

    Year 3 - unexplained diagnosis & 4 failed IUIs with Clomid/Letrozole

Year 4 - still unexplained & 3 failed IUIs with Follistim & Ovidral

Year 5 - trying on our own

  • I have "Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy" from the library now, & it's been my favorite so far.  More heavy on the "what to expect" & preparedness side, so I find other sources for weekly updates on what the LO is doing.  One thing to know about "Girlfriends", though, is that it's a little dated (unless there's an updated version I'm not aware of).

    Happy reading!  :)

  • I have a book called The Pregnancy Journal - A Day to Day Guide to a Healthy and Happy Pregnancy.  It's kind of cool b/c there is something to read about your developing baby every day.  You start with your due date at the end of the book and then number backwards until your conception date.  It was given to me at a gift for DS and I just renumbered everything for this pregnancy.
  • Alot of people I know recommend the "Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy" and my doc also warned me to stay away from "What to Expect" - they felt it was too negative, especially in the beginning. My doctor did give us "Your Pregnancy and Birth" which is really helpful, not an overload of information but enough to help us out.
  • We have what to expect...I do have to skip over large sections of the book that don't apply to me, but there is some good information.

DH has "Your Pregnancy for dad's to be" which he seems to enjoy.

We also got the "Baby Bargains" book, which is amazingly helpful.  They give baby brands a grade, and explain what the proscons are for each item.  We have been doing a little bit of shopping over the last week, and we have brought that book with us everytime!  They talk about everything to cribs and strollers to maternity clothes and diapers, and so on.  I highly recommend it!!

  • I have "What to Expect" and it definitely has some information that you need to take with a grain of salt. Sometimes it gives you the worst scenario or outcome before it gives you the basic information, which is rough to read. But that being said, it does have a lot of good information in it also. When reading it, you just have to remember, its not written about you so it won't be 100% correct (no book will)

I also love the Everything Pregnancy Book and the Everything First Time Dad Book (for DH). I think they do a great job of not scaring the crap out of you, but they do give it to you straight when needed. And I love the "Everything" books just because of the way theyre set up- very easy to read and find information!

  • Since this is my first pregnancy, I keep buying books! I have WTE but not loving it.  I really enjoyed "The Panic Free Pregnancy" and Girlfriend's Guide.  Just started the Mayo Clinic but it seems really great!
