Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Im back - and XP: freaking out about birth control..

posted in BF, but thought Id ask you ladies too...

I know its been talked about - but I am nervous about getting my Mirena this week.  The more I look into it the more nervous I get.

Ok so DH is deployed for the next 4 months so I don't really need to get anything, but I have met all out of pocket charges for my insurance this year - so getting it now would save us a lot of money.  Here is the thing.  Now I am really nervous about getting it.  I have read on here about a lot of women not liking it, and then I just found this article, among several others...

So I could wait and go on the mini pill when he comes home - bc I hopefully plan on extended BF - but will that kill my supply?

I'm really sesitive down there and condoms always rub me wrong (sorry if TMI) and make it so I am very sore afterwards.  We were using BF as our method of BC but I got my period one week b4 he left so thats obviously out and would have been out anyways bc of starting solids soon...

What would you do?  What have your experiences been.

  • I have no idea on this so I am no help. Sorry.

Did you see my comment on your "out" post?

  • no - off to check.
  • I'm EBFing and on the mini-pill and have noticed no supply problems.

If it were me, I wouldn't do anything that made me uncomfortable.  But really reflect on if you're just being scared or if these are TRUE concerns.   It's a lot of money you'd be saving, but no money is worth your health.

I've heard good things about it though.

  • I wanted mirena SOO bad but due to clotting thingy I cant use hormonal BC... everyone I talked to said they love it... the only downfall I have heard is the irregular but light periods and you bleed a lot when you first get it inserted...

PS I have paraguard... and I like that so far, but I haven't have  PP AF yet, so I guess I am no help because I heard that is the worst part...

  • I got swayed away from Mirena as well & decided to go with Implanon. It goes in your arm (bendable & soft) stays as long as 3 years. Dr said its safe with BFing.

thats what I wanted but my OB doesn't do it...

  • I was gonna suggest Mirena as well, but just saw your above comment. I love mine and have had no big problems or horror stories to share about it.

I considered the mini-pill when I first went on BC (since I was still nursing Harper then) but I am horrible at remembering to take pills, let alone at the same time every day. I didn't read as much into that one though so I'm not as familiar with the side effects.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help :(

  • I have Mirena and I honestly haven't noticed a drop in my supply (my supply dipped when I went back to work but that was before I got the IUD).
  • I'm on the mini pill and same old same old. No reduction in supply. You just have to be very careful that you take it within the same hour each day (ie. if you take it at 4 pm everyday and one day you take it at 5 pm you're ok, but any later and it's not effective).

Okay, that scares the bejezus outta me.  When I was on the pill, half the time I would forget to take it.

  • I started the mini pill a few weeks ago and my supply has been fine ::knock on wood::
