Baby Blackheads?

Does anyone else's LO have blackheads?  DS's baby acne has cleared up, but he still has a bunch of blackheads on his face.  I wash his face with Cetaphil 1x a day, but that doesn't seem to be helping...Anyone else?

Re: Baby Blackheads?

  • His skin may be overcompensating from the Cetaphil with oils and causing blackheads. There is no reason to be washing his face.

  • The pedi recommended it for the baby acne....I guess I should have stopped when it cleared up?
  • No, no, do it. I told you the other day that we recommend it 2x day for baby acne. Yes, overwashing the face can make acne worse, but that is papular/pustular acne, not comedonal acne. Comedones = white heads and black heads. They are keratin debris that has been oxidized by the O2 in the air, so has nothing to do with oil production. Let me know if you want me to send you samples, otherwise just leave it alone - it will go away eventually.

  • C has blackheads as well.  The pedi said they should go away, but he's had them since he's been born and I'm tired of looking at them.  I may ask about using Cetaphil.  Is it just the regular kind, or is there some sort of baby Cetaphil?
    I HAVE CHILDREN.
  • Just regular Cetaphil (there is no baby Cetaphil). If it doesn't go away, ask your pedi for an Rx of Retin-A or Differin. I sometimes use that in my baby acne patients. Definitely don't try to pick them! You can risk causing trauma to the surrounding tissue and leave a scar.

There is also something called a "nevus comedonicus" which is a birthmark that made up of blackheads, and unfortunately, is very difficult to treat. I doubt that you're LO's have this though...it's pretty rare
