1st Trimester

What is your favorite book?

I want to buy What to Expect When You're Expecting, but I don't know anyone who has read it..

Have you read WTEWYE? Or are there other really helpful books out there that I could find at Barnes and Noble?

TIA!

Re: What is your favorite book?

  • I have that, also Mayo Clinic book is good. I also like the Week by Week book. Got one of those lots of books on ebay. So it seems like I have ALL the pregnancy books. A few are lame. I also got Baby Bargains for when we start to shop for things.

  • Sorry, I posted before I was ready so......

I am currently reading WTEWYE, and I find it useful. I heard some women feel like it is just a book about risks to make you more nervous than you already are. There was a really long thread on BOTB a few days ago about this book. I am also reading "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" and I REALLY enjoy this book. Everyone is different though so I would go browse if I were you. I heard Jenny McCarthys Belly Laughs is a good read, although not very informative. Good Luck!

  • I have Your Pregnancy Week to Week as well and like it.
  • A friend gave me "A Panic Free Pregnancy" and I'm in the midst of reading it.  It's helpful for first trimester worries, it seems.  Also have WTE and The Girlfriend's Guide.
  • I have ordered Week by Week cause my friends that are mommas all told me it was great but it hasn't come in.  I also read Belly Laughs cause it was short and cute... I have The Girlfriend's Guide to Being Pregnant which is good as well (sort of like this message board not really medical), and found another book the other day that sums up how I was feeling called Pregnancy Sucks.

I will not go near What to Expect When you are expecting, I read the reviews on Amazon.com and they agreed with what two of my friends that are mommies said that it scares you and is very condescending.  We are already hormonal I don't need a book making me feel like a horrible mom if I drink a diet coke once or something.  They also said week by week was great to just be informative and share with their husbands whereas WTEWYE was more based towards the medical parts of pregnancy only.  They didn't feel like it helped them at all...  Just my $.02

Oh, and i do like the pregnancy sucks book.  Its funny, candid and honest.  There are some funny parts like the blue twinkies part!!

  • With my first pregnancy, I bought WTEWYE, Your Pregnancy Week by Week and I think it was called a pregnancy journal.  It was daily.  My favorite with YPWBW.  I felt like it was more detailed then WTEWYE and had pictures of what your baby looked like every week, approximate sizes and weight.  The pregnancy journal one was fun because it was very detailed (e.g. Today your baby grew fingernails, or something like that) and had fun tidbits about pregnancy and childbirth in different cultures.  I also had Baby 411, but that was more for after she was born.  Finally, I would go on babycenter.com or something about once a week.  Most of the info was overlapping, but still so fun to read.  Especially in the beginning before you're showing, or can feel the baby kick it is nice to know what is going on in there!  HTH!!
  • I'm reading "I'm Pregnant" and its by Lesley Regan....I like this one because it has different parts of each section like what your baby is developing, how you're feeling emotionall and physiclly, and it has a secton for how to nurture your baby during the six weeks after birth....

  • I'm currently reading "Spiritual Midwifery" by Ina May Gaskin and love it. It's to prepare you if your having a home birth.
  • I really like The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy.  It's by Vicki Iovine and it is very funny and pretty informative.  I would highly recommend it.  I'm also reading WTEWYE for the more textbook informational type stuff...  but the Girlfriends Guide definitely keeps you turning the pages.

  • I also have the Mayo Clinic guide, which is basically just my go-to manual on the clinical side of things.  But "Notes From the Belly" is a great book about bonding with your baby before they are born, and a really fun read to boot!
