Outdoor Activities?

I live in Fl, so, it is just now nice enough to venture outdoors without getting 3rd degree burns! So, I was wondering what types of fun group outdoor activities you do in the summer with toddlers? We do tons of inhome playdates for open play, cooking and crafts, but I struggle with ideas when it is my turn to host outdoor dates.

We usually go to the park and although the kids play at the playground or go on nature walks, we like to plan some kind of fun activity and I am running out of ideas...we have done bubbles in the park, a big wheel ride, shaving cream party, do you have any other ideas?

Re: Outdoor Activities?

  •  freeze a bunch of little toys, pretty rocks, etc., in a loaf pan (freeze in layers so they're not all together at the bottom). Then DD can melt it using warm water to "rescue" the toys. Really fun and keeps her busy for quite a while!

We have a water table, so I bring out different shape sponges, shells, etc., to play with in that. I also give her scoops, to get them all out.

DD LOVES to make chalk people on sidewalk/walls. I trace her in chalk and color her in.

Have you ever made "gak"? It's just equal parts liquid starch, Elmer's white glue and water. Mix it up in a ziploc and maybe a few drops of food coloring. So much fun!

We do most of our painting, etc., outside. Yesterday we put glue all over paper and then sprinkled dyed salt on it.

  • We also have a water table and we use a bunch of different bath/water toys, buckets, sponges, ect. Sometimes I'd put rice, beans, or sand instead and gave him shovels and buckets and cars and funnels.

DS also loves chalk and he can draw for awhile! We also bring out our different ride ons and just let them play in the driveway.

Now that he's old enough we went on a "scavenger hunt" and just had him look for things that he knew the name of, ex: his red bucket, a blackberry from the blackberry bush, the star ball, ect. He always had fun playing that and was always suprise with himself when he found them.

We also let him do a "car wash" gave him a bucket with soapy water and let him wash his ride ons and his outside play trucks and cars, this kept him occupied for a loooong time.

We also make "gak" or goo as we call it like brightning said we make it using 1 cup of cornstarch and adding 3/4 cup of water a little at a time while stirring it. And we also froze some small toys in water so that he could watch the ice melt and get the toys out, we sometimes put them in our kiddie pool with just a little bit of water.

And we set out paper and just let the kids paint (usually just put them in their bathing suits for easy clean up). And we give them different things to use to paint with, an old cloth, a sponge, a spray bottle with colored water, small paint rollers, old kitchen scrubbers, ect.

We also had tomato plants this year, DS loved checking the tomatoes everyday, and he inspected each one. I bought him a little watering can and I'd fill it with water and he'd go around watering all the plants and leaves and grass, and more common than not, the dirt in our front and backyards.

Of course there is always the old fall back of bubbles.
