Home made baby food

Does anyone here make their own baby food?  I have 2 friends that do and they love it. One is a SAHM with 5 kids total (home schools too!) and the other is a mom of 3 that works full time and they say that not only is it easy, but WAY cheaper than jarred food.  They're not completely against jarred food, they use it when they're out and about, but mostly they love making the homemade food.

I'm thinking I might give it a try as well, so I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with it.

  • We made all the girls' food.  It was really easy, and I hate to cook.  We did it less for cost reasons and more so we were in control of what they were consuming.

  • I had the same website rec. to me. It looks totally easy. I am going to start making and freezing some soon!

  • We did buy some jarred food for convenience when we went out, but I did make quite a few purees myself. It's super easy, and cheaper too. We bought some ice cube trays to freeze 2 oz servings. DD loves sweet potato, carrot, among other things. Now that she's older I don't puree it anymore, I just slice it and freeze the steamed slices and reheat in the microwave.
  • I made a lot of Tre's food. I was so nervous to do it and then I had a girl show me and it was SO easy. I also loved the Super Babyfood book, toward the back it tells you how best to cook and puree most everything.
  • I made almost all of DS's baby food.  We bought a few jars here and there to use to take out with us.  That website is a great resource.

The only thing I have to add is that I bought silicone mini muffin tins from Bed, Bath & Beyond and they worked so much easier than the ice cube trays for popping the cubes out once they were frozen.  Then we just put them into freezer bags and labeled them.  With the ice cube trays, I found that the purees didn't pop out as easy as a regular ice cube and I almost had to melt the bottoms of them to get the cubes out, which made them stick together once we put them into the freezer bags.

HTH.  Have fun!  I always had fun making them and plan on doing it again with #2.
