Alabama Babies

Avery's EI Appt was today

My guess is that Avery will not qualify for extra services from what I gathered from the evaluator's comments.

Avery was so well behaved and interactive with them and us. She talked and she played well and showed off her crawling skills.

Verbally, they were not that worried about her not talking. Just to keep repeating words with her but commented that she is very receptive and that is just as important as expressing her words. they were impressed that we could tell her simple commands and she would follow them.

And as far as her motor skills, yes, she is slower than other babies. They mentioned that they noticed we help her too much when she's pulling up and showed us what to watch for and to let her do it more on her own...and it's ok if she gets frustrated. But... they attributed her slowness to .... LAZINESS... LMAO. They observed that she is really laid back. We showed them how when we layed her down, she just would play with her foot, or point to the ceiling and talk, instead of getting upset and trying to sit back up. I told them that she was sitting up at 6 months old but never tried going after toys... and not because she couldn't but that she would rather find something else to do instead of attempt to go after toys. And then she finally did get tired of laying on her back and proceeded to roll over and sit back up...

The Evaluator couldn't make an official report at the time but she did lead us to think that Avery was not behind enough to warrant additional services. And said she really thinks a lot of it is her personality. And...that her fine motor skills were advanced.

it's definitely a relief but now we still have to get her walking and talking soon :)

Re: Avery's EI Appt was today

  • Sarah-  I am a speech pathologist and used to work for EI.  Based on what you said, it doesn't sound like she is going to qualify.  It really does sound like she is just a laid back baby who will do things on her own time, especially since she is doing so well receptively.  I really wouldn't worry about her that much.  She may be one of those babies who goes from not saying anything to talking in complete sentences.

I don't know if you want any suggestions, but here is one idea.  The main thing I encouraged parents to do in order to encourage speech is to find the one thing that you know Avery wants (i.e. juice cup, toy, etc.) and put it where she can't reach it but can see it.  Have her use some kind of vocalization for the word before you give it to her.  You can also use baby signs.  She will get the picture pretty quickly that you aren't going to just give her something because you think she wants it.  I hope this helps!

  • nj - thanks so much!!!  at the time of her dr appt she wasn't really vocalizing her wants... in the month since her appt, she is now reaching and pointing for things and either saying "eh eh eh" or "dadadad" - everything is "dadada" or she will just blow raspberries and laugh at herself...

She does do baby signs too - she will sign MORE, All done, eat, milk and Dog.  (she is slightly obsessed with the dog).

she just wants to make me worry!

Thanks so much for your input!

  • Great news!!

My best friend's 1st child did not walk until she was 15 months old. It was completely her personality as well.

EI never really crossed my mind for Avery and I am a special ed teacher. Sometimes drs make us panick for no reason!

I am super impressed w/ her ability to sign all of those words!

  • That is awesome that she is already using so many signs!  The next thing you know, you will be wondering when will she be quiet!!!

  • That's great news!  My cousin was not walking until awhile after turning one and was slow to speak.  It really seemed like he just didn't want his voice to be heard b/c when he started talking he'd speak just above a whisper. He talks so much more now and I'm sure Avery will be too soon!
  • Glad you got a good report!
  • Well, that's great news that they don't seem concerned!  They do say all babies develop at their own pace!!  Try not to stress too much (I know, easier said than done, but I had to say it!)
