Trouble TTC

clomid and testing

I have read quite a few of the posts where people have indicated getting full testing done before going the clomid route. I have a question because my husband and I had no problems with child 1 - so my ob/gyn is not sending my husband for any testing and she doesn't think it's my tubes because i did have one healthy pregnancy. She did do blood work and my day 3 testing was "normal" but day 21 testing came back with a progesterone level of 5 which i guess means i didn't ovulate. So she is suggesting clomid and then another day 21 blood work (but no ultra sound). Based on this would you go the clomid route? I am worried about side effects and all of the posts indicating that drs give it out like candy. But we really do want to have a second child.

Any thoughts very much appreciated.

Re: clomid and testing

  • You need to see an RE rahter then an ob/gyn. Ob's are great delivering babies, not so good with making them. What you are experiencing right now is a doctor handing out clomid and hoping it is the fix you need.

No matter whether you have 1 child or 10, secondary infertility can and has occurred. I needed my tubes tested once a year, because blockages can happen in that time frame.

If she did cd21 testing for progesterone, that can be inaccurate because not everyone ovulates on cd14, she needed to do the draw 7 days past ovulation where progesterone spikes. If done too soon, the results are not accurate.

Please be an advocate for your health and find a doctor who will do all necessary testing, and do it properly, before prescribing a fix.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!

  • I am in the same boat as you and my OB suggested Clomid so I went to an RE for a second opinion and he looked at my chart from my prog. test, which was 7 days after O, not just day 21, and gave me the choice of Clomid or Femara (which I chose) and I will go back 7 days after I O (still waiting on)  So for me, they both said the same thing and I am unmonitored

You do realize that the only FDA approved use for Femara is the treatment of breast cancer and the makers of the drug issued a warning in 2005 that it may cause birth defects?  What made you choose to use it?

  • Rowing the same boat, except no children yet. Tried for over a year with no sucess. Just saw my OBGYN this week. I will be doing Provera to kick start it and then Clomid. She has tested for ovulation before after 72 days no period and I had not ovulated. She said she would like to try Clomid route before doing radiology to check my anatomy and before sending me to infertility specialist. She believes my anatomy is adequate because I was regular on BCP. I have faith in her decision here and don't feel the need to run to a specialist. I was instantly concerned about side effects as well, since I have heard of many women suffering through infertility treatments only to be unsuccessful and then be thrown into early menapause. I asked about side effects and expressed my concern and she said I should not worry on Clomid. If I need to change to a different treatment, then I will need to be more concerned about side effects.

New to the boards, would love to hear your story and your progress. Would love company in my row boat if your intersted (lol). Good luck!!!
