1st Trimester

Who else got the H1N1 with thimerisol?

I have been on a freakin roller coaster of emotion with this stupid vaccine. I finally got it today with the thimerisol. I wanted preservative free but they are not getting them anymore. Both my regular doc(my old ob) and my new ob highly recommended. I trust them both very much, but I am still very nervous. It is over with now. Just wondering if I am all alone here.

Re: Who else got the H1N1 with thimerisol?

  • The shot I got was not preservative free, but its all they had. My OB strongly recommended that I get it, esp since I work in healthcare. So far, I am alive to talk about it! (I got it a little over 2 weeks ago)

I'm not worried about me. I am worried about the baby. :)

  • I had some tuna casserole today so I probably got the same amount of mercury as you did from your shot. Don't worry.

  • Me, and I'm not worried about it.  I'd be much more worried about getting H1N1.

Well, I cant help ya there. :-( I am just hoping and praying all is okay in there too, so I know what you mean. Another reason why I am so anxious about knowing there is a beating heart in there!

Ditto this. The level of mercury in the non-preservative free shot is about the same as in a tuna fish sandwich.

  • I did. And I have zero worries about it. The thirmosisol thing is blown far out of proportion.
  • I just got home from the doctor's office where I got the shot.  I figured I will avoid fish for a week or so to balance it out.  I am worried too but the thought of H1N1 scares me more.  Good luck to us all!
  • My doctor said that the miniscule amount of mercury in the thimerosol passes through your gut in a day.  As opposed to the mercury in a tuna sandwich, which travels through your blood system and takes up to 2 weeks to clear.  I got the shot with preservatives, not worried at all.  (I was more concerned with what would happen to me and my baby if we got H1N1... MUCH bigger threat there!!!)

If your doctor recommended it, whats the problem?

So you don't give a second thought to what your doctor says? You don't ever wonder if it is the right decision? I guess I am different because I do.  Just because I trust him doesn't mean I am not aloud to worry that it is or is not the right decision.

I might give a second thought to what she says, but she went to medical school, residencies, interships and is a fellow in obstetrics.  So I TRUST what she says over a board of internet strangers.  It is her JOB and she is far more knowledgeable than me in that area.  I am far more worried about getting H1N1 than the tiny amount of mercury in the shot.

Thanks for your opinion but I didn't come on and ask if I should get it, I asked who did get it.

  • I still go it.  I work in a clinic and chances of me getting H1N1 are pretty high and that was all they offered

Actually, it may even be less - or at least pass through your body at a much faster rate. Tuna has methylmercury and thimerosol has ethylmercury.  Methylmercury is the one blamed for some health issues, not ethylmercury.
  • About not "trusting" what your dr. says, I think they all have different opinions.  I was told not to touch fish with a 10 ft pole.  Most of you are allowed to eat fish within reason.  A friend who works for an OB says to get the flu vaccines only after the 2nd tri but my dr. and most say it is ok in the 1st tri.  So really, they have been to med. school but who is right and who is not.  I think getting someone else's opinion is reasonable.

    This.

  • That's what I got today. Testing shows that it contains as much mercury as a tuna sandwich. No need to worry there!

  • I got it two days ago.  My ob-gyn said they'd get it in the office sometime soon but if I can get it somewhere else to go ahead and do it.  My work offered me the H1N1 and it had it.  But my doctor said I was better off getting any shot than no shot.  I try not to think about it too much.  You worry about too many things while you're pregnant anyway, might as well pick the battles.  I already got the shot, I'm just waiting for the u/s on Wednesday to check up on the little bean.
