I told people I was on a medication I couldn't mix with alcohol. I have in the past had issues with my blood pressure and used one of the meds as my excuse.
I have the same problem, I'm going out with a good friend on Saturday, whom I haven't seen in a few months. DH and I haven't told ANY family or friends yet...I'm going with the, "I'm just finishing up an antibiotic prescription, and I can't have any alcohol while taking it." excuse...It's hard to argue with...Others I've read about or thought of: I'm just getting over a bug and really don't feel well enough to drink yet, or I'm really trying to watch my weight and am not drinking any alcohol right now (that one is an easy one though for friends to say, "Come on! Just have one drink!"....Hope this helps!! Good luck!

I thought about the sick excuse since I do have a cold currently. I need water to fight the cold right? I also thought about using my DH to drink my wine (did you see desparate housewives?) I think that could actually work!
I stressed out about this way more than needed. DH went to the bar and ordered me a sprite w/ lime. No one suspected a thing. (I'm a vodka/tonic drinker...so it looked like what I usually drink).
None of my friends would have ever believed that I was "on medication" or "DD". Even when I was DD before pg I would still sip on a beer through out the night. Dh and I just both ordered beers and he would drink some of mine through out the night and then trade off and I'd carry around his (almost) empty. No one seemed to notice but I had to avoid the shots too!
As long as you have something in your hand, you'd be surprised how little people pay attention!
My friends knew we were TTC and having trouble so I just told them our new Dr. told me not to drink at all.
You could also say you are trying to lose some weight, have a hangover from last night, have to get up super early tomorrow, am on antibotics for a UTI, make up some other ailment that you don't want to drink because of, tell them you are sick of drinking and have decided to take a break for 30 days.
I'm in the same boat tonight-- my plan is to order the same kind of beer that DH orders and switch with him periodically throughout dinner, whilst taking "sips" from my bottle, of course

Get to the restaurant first (go very early if you need to) and tip off your waiter then. Order whatever you want to drink (anything with a lime in it looks like a cocktail), and ask the waiter to keep yours virgin for the rest of the night.
I've used the medication excuse and also saying "I'll have an ice water with lemon for now" when the waiter comes then keep looking at the drink menu but just never order one.
Just order a beer and carry it around with you, act like you're taking drinks from it, dump some out each time you go the bathroom! Noone will even notice!
At a work party, when someone offered me a glass of wine I said "Oh, no thank you. I just took some Tylenol for a headache and I shouldn?t mix."
Another time at a family dinner I said that I wasn?t feeling too hot because I had drinking the night before and said that I?ll I should do is drink some water.

yeah, it is a small dinner with friends. No waiter or bar for an excuse. They are all very perceptive!
Order a drink from the server at the table just like you normally would, then excuse yourself soon after and before your drinks arrive. Find him or her and ask them to bring you a virgin, but keep the drink on the tab. I did this at a one-on-one dinner with my boss. The server and bartender went along, and he was none the wise.
I think it's really lame to lie, but do what you have to do.
~whoa~
I don't think it's a big deal to keep it quiet until the family has been told. Even if you have to lie about it to friends for a few weeks. I did when I went to a college reunion, no biggie. I'm pretty sure my parents appreciated being the first to know rather then hearing it through the grapevine.
by small dinner with friends, I meant at a friends house so the only waiter is my friend! I would totally tell them except I want to tell my parents when I see them next weekend first. oh well, thanks ladies! you are creative!
Just say your stomach has been feeling kinda off & you think that sprite will settle it--and kinda give the hint that its something gross and pooping related haha nobody asks for details when it comes to that
