Daycare and Bottles

I'm going back to work in a few weeks and need to buy some bottles for daycare.  I breastfeed and so far only have a few 5 oz bottles.  Will I get much use out of smaller bottles or should I just get the larger sizes now?

Re: Daycare and Bottles

  • I say get the larger size.  We only had 2 small size bottles and the reason we had those was because they came in a set with the larger size.  Plus, with as much as my ds eats, he was on to 5 oz bottles by 3 months.

  • I got a full set of bottles before starting daycare.  After a week, the DCP said DD was taking in a lot of air and would probably do better with Dr. Brown's.  So I had to buy a full set of those!  I got the big size b/c she takes 5 oz bottles.

Anyway, I would wait on buying tons of bottles until you figure things out a little more.

  • I only ever used 5 ounce bottles (even at 13 months she still would prefer them over the sippy cup).  As she got bigger, they were easy for her to hold, and she often didn't want more than that at one time.  If she wanted more, I just gave her more from another bottle.  Less wasteful, too.  Throwing out a bottle of unused BM is so painful.  So much work down the drain.
  • We're still using the small Avent bottles.  DD still only drinks about 4 oz. during a feeding so they're still working for her.

  • We use 4 oz playtex. My lactation consultant said that I shouldn't have to give DD more BM because over time BM changes to meet the needs of the baby so she won't need to increase her intake. So I have enough bottles so that 3 are sent to daycare and I can pump at work into the other bottles.
  • I would suggest getting the larger size.  You don't have to fill them up - you can still only put 4 - 5 oz in the bigger ones.  You can't put more in the smaller bottles if you ever get to the point that you need larger bottles (you may not).  If you buy smaller ones now and then need bigger ones later, you will spend more money in the long run.  I only bought the bigger sized ones on advice from a friend and I am glad I did.  I do agree that you may not want to buy too many until you are sure of a brand that will work for you.  My DD didn't have a preference but some do.  Towards the end of the first year, I stopped pumping at work so our formula bottles were 6 - 8 oz.  Good luck and this board is great for advice and support!

  • You should really never need more than 5 or 6oz of breastmilk. My bottles are the small version but still fit that much in.
