  I've seen them hung on a rod, like you would a curtain.  This is from the PBK website:

  JoAnn's, Michael's and I think Hobby Lobby all have several methods for hanging quilts without damaging them.  One that I've used is two wooden blocks that you can stain or paint that have two roller balls on the inside.  The quilt is held up by the roller balls.
