Do you think your LO will need glasses?

No one in my family needed glasses unless it was because of old age. I have 20/20. However, DH's entire family does have glasses or contacts. My DH's are -3.50 & -4.50 that's a steep RX. Is there an studies showing which odds are better? If he needs them, he needs them but obviously I would love for him to be able to see a clock etc without having to put glasses on. Geeked

Hope this isn't considered an Unpopular Opinion..

Re: Do you think your LO will need glasses?

  • Not sure yet, but I have a hunch. DH and his sister and his dad all have terrible eyesight. They say it runs in the family.

I've never had glasses or contacts and no on on my side of the family ever has. Not sure which way he'll swing...

  • I have terrible eyes and have had glasses/contacts  since 4th grade.  DH refuses to have an eye exam but he thinks his vision isn't great.  So I'm sure she will have to have something.
  • I think my oldest will eventually.  She always fails the test at school but when I take her to get them checked she is fine.  I was told since she was a preemie she has a higher chance of needing them and my husband has awful eye sight.
  • Probably.  DH needs to wear glasses, but he never does (his sight isn't that bad, though).  I can barely see two feet in front of me without my glasses (and everyone in my family is like that).

As a tradeoff, neither DH nor I needed braces, so we're hoping DS takes after us there!

  • DH had 2 have lasik and i wear glasses, so I would bet yes.

  • My DS #3 had to start wearing glasses at 2 1/2 yrs old. That was a PITA trying to get him to keep them on. Me and DH both have great eyes, so needless to say it was a shock!
  • I had to get glasses when I was 2 years old. I am extremely farsighted. But my DH has perfect eyes. I plan on having LO's eyes tested early.
  • I have horrific vision (-7.5, -8.5) but DH has better than 20/20. I'm hoping DS takes after DH in that regard, or at the very worst only needs mild vision correction. I just don't want the poor boy to need Coke bottle glasses like me (I wear contacts mostly.) Though he would look some kind of cute in Buddy Holly glasses :p

  • Probably not for another 50-60 years. Nobody in DH or my families' needed glasses until well into middle age.
  • It's possible...I have perfect eyesight, but DH had glasses really early.  I think by the time he was 4.
  • I am going to say probably yes.  We actually just got a referral from our pedi because DD is still crossing her eyes a lot.  The dr noticed it at our last appt and went back today and wanted to make a referral.  We take her to the eye doctor in 2 weeks, so hopefully it is nothing.  I have been wearing glasses since 6th grade and my script now is like a -8 in both eyes.  DH has glasses but never wears them since high school.  Both sides of our family has bad eyes, so she is not looking good!  Hope the eye dr. figures something out.  Anyone had their LO to the eye dr yet? Do you know what they do to a baby to check the eyes? TIA

I mentioned this because I was an Ophthalmic Technician for 5 years per baby. They will take a pen light move it around & watch the baby follow it. They can even put lenses in front of eyes & they will give the drops to dilate, even for babies.

  • Ah....your DH and I share a common bond....sh!t vision. So not fun. My DH has 20/20 and my vision is -3.75 -& -4.25...sigh. I'm assuming Savi will need glasss, but maybe I'm just pessimistic.

Get this: My father is -11....yes you read that correctly...-11....legally blind, and my mother is 20/20. My eyes are horrible, but my brother has 20/20.
