Weight gain??

I am 15 weeks pregnant with twins and havent gained a pound?! I'm super concerned but OB keeps blowing it off saying its normal. I had no morning sickness whatsoever. The only thing I can think of is that I had OHSS after IVF and was bloated. I think I was normally about 125 prior to IVF (I never paid attention) and at my first OB visit which was at 5 weeks I was 128. As of yesterday, still 128!

What did yalls doctor tell you about weight gain during the first 5 months??

Thanks!

Re: Weight gain??

  • My doctor told me that she wanted me to gain between 35-50 lbs total. I was 116 lbs when I got pregnant and after the first 20 weeks had only gained 7 lbs. I was always concerned that I wasn't gaining enough weight (even though I was always eating). My Dr. said that it is better for you and the babies if the majority of the weight is gained towards the end of the pregnancy bc this means that it is the babies getting bigger and not you using pregnancy as an excuse to eat everything in sight. Don't worry the weight will come. Good Luck with everything.

  • My doctor never really told me what to do, but I tried to follow Dr. Luke's recommendation of 24 pounds by 24 weeks.  I have gained 26 pounds in about 24 weeks.  I saw the doctor a couple days ago and he said he is happy with my weight gain.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I was told to gain 45-50lbs total BUT also to gain at least 20 by week 25. I follow the recommendations in Dr. Luke's book. Twin pregnancies are different - you might gain more at the end but remember most twins are born around week 35-36. You don't get as much time at the end. I really recommend Dr. Luke's book.
  • I was 123 lbs when I got pg.  My dr. wanted me to gain between 45-55 lbs total.  I tried to follow Dr. Luke's book, for 20 lbs by 20 wks.  I was just about there.   I couldn't eat everything she said though!  I ended up gaining 52 lbs and delivered at 37 wks, which amazed my Dr.  Her goal all along was to get me to 34 wks.
  • I meant to also say not to push yourself to gain 20 lbs in 5 weeks, to get to Dr. Luke's recommendation.  The key is slow and steady weight gain.
  • My doctor said she wanted me to gain 35-40 lbs total.  At 32 weeks, I am up 26 lbs and have started to gain weight more rapidly now.  I tried not to focus on my weight as much as how the babies were growing and since my babies have always been at or above where they should be, I figured I was doing good.

  • I would rec. seeing a Maternal Fetal Medicine/Perinatalogist in addition to your OB. My OB referred me to one for my 20wk anatomy scan and I am SO THANKFUL he did! I will be seeing her monthly in addtion to my OB.

My OB said, don't worry about your weight ( I have only gained around 10lbs at almost 21wks) I went to the MFM and she was very concerned, put me on 5 different supplements, took some blood, found out in addition to not gaining enough weight I was anemic (very low iron) and gave me some solid, thoughtful advice about how to go about upping my calories, what to eat, has me keeping a "food diary" every day for her to review. ( I am a very picky eater w/ lots of stomach/gallbladder issues).

I feel so lucky to be able to start adding these supplements, foods etc.. now at 20 weeks so I give these little babies as much as they need for the remainder of the pregnancy. I like my OB, but I just think most general OB/GYN are not really in tune to the needs of multiples ( I had another OB the first 14 wks of my PG who was just like my current OB, very laize-faire about weight gain etc..)

PS: I was totally anto-Dr. Luke until I met w/ my MFM. She is a big believer in Dr. Luke's principles and I guess I am a convert now! :) I have gained 2lbs in the week since my 1st appt. with her and feel more energetic too.

  • Did you work out before you were pregnant/have some muscle on you?  How are your clothes fitting?  I worked out pretty intensively before I got pregnant and then had to stop right away due to early spotting.  I was really worried around the same weeks that you are at that I wasn't gaining weight until I noticed my clothes weren't fitting as well.  I finally figured out I was losing muscle as fast as I was gaining fat so the scale was registering even.  Now I am flabby and and have gained the suggested 24 lbs by 24 weeks which the hospital nutritionist proclaimed "perfect" yesterday!
  • As of my last appointment on Monday I have gained a total of 8 pounds in 18 weeks. My Dr. really didn't say anything about it. At my first appointment with her she wanted me to only gain between 25-30lbs, which I find odd because that is the same amount of weight she told me to gain with my last pregnancy with one. I'm just basically doing what I've been doing until my Dr. says I need to change.

  • I am similar to you and my Peri said 10-15 pounds by 20 weeks, around 40 pounds total would be fine.  He said gaining more toward the end is normal.  Try not to fret, best of luck :)

  • My MFM also follows Dr. Luke. She wants me to gain 50-55lbs total. She reiterated what Dr. Luke states about the weight gain being most critical in the 1st 28 weeks. My goal is 35lbs by 28 weeks. She also has me on supplements, extra vitamins, and folic acid.

I highly encourage you to ask for a referral to a peri. Most OBs haven't done the research about multiples and just want MOMs to gain 10lbs more than a singleton pg. You may or may not need to gain more than this, but the types of food you should be eating and weight gain earlier in the pg are crucial for babies growth.

  • Are you generally following Dr. Luke's recommendations?  It is possible that your bloat disappeared (lest assume 3-5 pounds of bloat) and that you have gained 3 pounds of weight.  At 15 weeks, that weight has to account for the weight of your breast tissue, your placenta, your increased blood volume and 1/4 pounds for each baby.  I would seriously start increasing my caloric intake if I were you.

Does your OB specialize in twins?  Are you seeing an MFM also?  If not, I would seriously consider going to an MFM in addition to you OB, sounds like your OB is giving you the same advice as he/she would give to a woman carrying a singleton.

My MFM hasn't read the Dr. Luke book, but he was very specific that in his experience, to ensure the best possible outcome (and prevent preterm delivery) I should gain 38-45 pounds and I should do so steadily throught the entire pregnancy.  He stressed that gaining most of it towards the end of a pregnancy is not good for multifetal gestations.  That the advise of gaining most weight at the end applies only to singletons.  So I have been working towards 20 pounds in 20 weeks.

  • I was actually down 20 pounds by 17 weeks because of horrible m/s.  Neither my OB nor my mfm was concerned.  Both of the babies were (and still are) growing well and their weights are right where they should be.

I have gained back almost 9 pounds since 17 weeks, and my OB says I'm doing fine.  I tried hard to follow Dr. Lukes recs, but holy cow.  I just do what I can and add extra protein and dairy (protein drinks too) wherever I can.

If your OB is not concerned yet, I wouldnt stress.  Just try to add extra calories where you can, GL!

  • I was extremely sick in the beginning and lost quite a bit of weight (15+ lbs, on Zofran pump for 17+ weeks, etc).  I was a normal healthy weight before hand and only ended up gaining 12 pounds.  My doctors made comments, but they knew I was doing the best I could.  I delivered 5lb 12 oz and 5lb 15oz babies at 36 weeks 1 day.  So my lack of weight gain didn't affect my girls weights at all.
