CD average cost?

How much would you say you have spent on your CD stash?  And what kind of stash do you have - prefolds/pockets/fitteds/AIOs? And how many total dipes?

I'm wondering if whether the savings won't be much more than disposables if we don't use prefolds but end up going with the more daddy/babysitter-friendly AIOs/AI2s/pockets/etc.

I don't want to use cloth just because they are so stinkin' cute.  My DH isn't totally on board, but is willing to try; I don't want to end up with a DH who hates it and a stash that didn't end up saving us all that much anyway.

Re: CD average cost?

  • You can always sell them. Also, buying used saves money.

I would estimate that we've spent about $600 on 30 diapers (mostly aios -bg organics- with a few fitteds -gms and b4s-), 5 pul covers, 5 wool covers (includ some interlock), and a dozen pfs. You can def do it cheaper or go more expensive. We did this gradually over the course of months so it wouldn't be such a shock all at once.

My nb stash consists of mostly pfs (44 total) with 3 fitteds, 3 wool covers, and 4 pul covers and cost about $150.

You can also make some to help save $.

  • I have bought every diaper brand new.

    fitteds:  $6.50-15 each
    covers:  $5-17 each
    pockets:  $10-20 each
    AIOs: $15-17 each

In the year I have been using CDs I have spent $500 including shipping, but I sold a bunch off and got $100 back. Therefore my current stash  cost me $400.

My current stash is 18 diapers for DS and 6 diapers for DD (she is potty trained only needs them for naps and night).  I also have some hemp doublers and other inserts that are factored into my total spent.

I only use CDs part-time.  I have done a lot of math and calculating to see if it was saving us money.  I started when DD was 17 months, and it cut the number of disposables I bought in half.  My math after 10 months of CDing with just her had us saving $5 a month.  Those savings would have been more significant if I had started when she was younger and needing more frequent changes.

Now that DS finally fits into our CDs, we are saving even more.  Using CDs on him means I am buying a third of the disposables than if he was in the disposables full-time.  Plus some of the diapers I bought for DD are getting used on him, so the savings are starting to pile up, but I haven't done exact math on him yet.  If I did CDs full-time it really would save me a lot more.

ETA:  I forgot the amount I spent includes 3 diapers that we're selling, so my total number of diapers is 18 for DS + 6 for DD + 3 for sale= 27 diapers for $400

  • i'm more of a cheap-skate, so here's what we have invested in our current stash. I received 6 fitteds and 3 covers as shower gifts, which was probably about $100 worth of merchandise, but I could easily be doing without them or have gotten them used for 1/2 that cost.

14 GMD prefolds seconds $35 incl shipping (i can't remember for sure)
    2 snappis $2.50
    1 thirsties cover $11
3 blueberry one-size pockets (for overnight) $37 from outlet
    3 BG 3.0 pockets $35 used
    1 swaddlebees pocket $12
1 little beetle one (used at a yard sale!) $1
2 Bububebe one sized fitteds (used) $30
4 made by yours truly fitteds - probably $6 in fabric/notions
3 hemp inserts also made by me - $11 for fabric and shipping
2 upcycled wool soakers (Free-  old wool sweater from my closet)

    $180.00

I could easily do without the BubuBebes and the swaddlebees, which would bring it down below $140. And this stash we have been in since maybe May with a few additions and subtractions here and there, and most of it will fit him a good while longer. I will be able to sell most of this for probaly 60% of what I paid.

  • While I do keep track of how much I purchased each diaper for, I refuse to highlight the total column to see what I've spent.....it'll not be pretty and I started CDing b/c it would save money, haha!

Anyway, I would suggest starting with BGs and I forgot to look at your ticker, but if you are pregnant you can start with the small ones and buy used....around $8-$10 each and sell them for the same amount. Then you will only be out shipping costs and paypal fees. I know I saved a ton during this time.

With one size BGs, if you have enough time I'd suggest waiting for seconds. Cottonbabies just had a ton for $10-$12 each.

  • I've spent about $700 total which also includes my newest purchase of a NB stash of PF's, wool to knit soakers, and I have 31 OS diapers as well.  We have definitely saved a lot of money in the long run by using cloth.  Plus, I agree with pp, buying used will save money and you can make your own as well to save money.  Plus, when you're done with them you can sell them and get some investment back.
  • $604 so far (including shipping).  I plan to sell my NB/Small Stash once she outgrows them.  I think I should be able to get pretty close to what I purchased it for and maybe break even.

DH was not wanting to use cloth at all expecially the PF untill we went shopping for diapers after DS was born.  It cost $23 a week for the pampers swaddlers and it filled three bags of garbage.  The extra cost of going to the dump was the straw thta broke the camels back he learned how to use those PF's and will not go back.  He hates the pockets though he will not unstuff or stuff them.  IF DS is wearing one he will not change him or will just leave the diaper on the changing table he likes the PF's better.
