Do you make your own baby food? q's

Hi, I make dd's baby food and am looking for some additional ideas.  I've read wholesomebabyfood.com and I love the site but I'm looking for YOUR ideas.  Also, I have read conflicting info about using frozen food and then re-freezing.  For example, using frozen peas, steaming them then puree-ing them and then refreezing them - is that ok?

 So far I have made:

pears, peaches, apples, plums, mangos, butternut squash, peas, green beans, sweet potatoes, carrots, cauliflower

she's also had banana and avocado

I do not feed her baby cereal.  She is now exclusively formula fed but until she was 7 months she also had pumped milk.  She is just now getting her first tooth.

Thanks for any advice.  I used to be more of a "regular" here but working full time and taking care of a 9 month old does not leave me much nesting time.

  • It sounds like what we were doing - we did the prunes instead of plums, but other than that.  Not sure about the refreezing issue on the peas - I tended not to freeze peas because they were so easy to make in small batches.

  • I would highly suggest picking up the book Super Baby Foods. While I really like wholesomebabyfoods.com, I think this book goes a little more into depth about your LO's health.

    Anyway, as far as the freezing stuff, this is how I look at it. Obviously, fresh is absolute best. A carrot picked from your backyard and you feed it to your LO the same day it's picked raw. But, from there is all goes down in nutritional value a little bit. I'm not an expert on this by any means, but I've picked things up here and there through reading....but frozen is sometimes the most healthy because it is "flash frozen" very soon after being picked. Whereas fresh stuff you get at the store has been loosing its nutrients every day since it's been picked/sitting in storage/sitting on the shelf. Then different methods of cooking loose more nutrients. Steaming is the best way to keep all the nutrients in. Then, if you add back in the water from under the steamer tray, you add back in some nutrients. So that is how I kind of approach that whole topic...

    As far as re freeezing things, from what I have read, there is nothing wrong with it. With my DS, he started eating solids in the winter, so it was hard to get my hands on organic produce. I turned to frozen from the health foods sotre/Trader Joes, steamed it, pureeds it and re-froze into cubes. The only thing I read is that taste wise it's not optimal but still better than baby food in a jar. So I'm fine with that.

    Also, one more thing I wanted to mention. You said you aren't doing baby cereal. Just remember the food pyramid.....grains is at the bottom and what a body should be getting the most servings of a day. So although your LO might not like commercial rice cereal, there are all kinds of different things you can try.....barley, oatmeal, millet, etc. Also keep in mind with starting to introduce meats/beans/tofu in the next couple months for even more rounded diet.
