I was given the option to have "the Pill" (in quotes because I don't know the name of it...methotrexate?) or to have a D&C. My reasons to chose a d&c were personal and I don't feel like going into it right now, but I was wondering if anyone has ever taken option 2?
What was it like? Do you mind sharing your experience? I almost feel a sense of guilt that I chose one over the other...
Re: D&C vs. "the Pill"
I was given the option of the pill with the warning that it could be extremely painful, last longer, and that 3/4s of the women my ob prescribed it to ended up in the ER for an emergency d&c, had to come back for a second dose, or ended up needing a d&c anyways.
Made my choice easier to live with.
I wasnt given an option with my two early losses. I was told the D&C was necessary becuase the first time the baby had been gone for two weeks. The second one I m/c naturally the sac but my betas went up and the dr was concerned about what was still in my uterus.
When I lost Grace at 18 wks I did choose to labor naturally instead of having the surgery. My reasoning was that I am a christian and she was going to be born healthy, my body failed (infection in amniotic fluid). I couldnt be responsible for when God chose to take her to heaven. She miraculously lived for 4 1/2 hours after being delivered. I do not regret that decision at all. I got to see her and spend time holding her while she was alive..
I think its a personal choice and depends on the circumstances..
I was given 3 options:
1. D&E
2. Wait to let my body m/c on it's own
3. The pill
My doc explained that with options 2 and 3 there was a pretty good chance that I'd have to come back in for a D&E anyway. That made my choice easier. I wouldn't have been able to take waiting and not knowing when it would happen. My understanding is that the pill is really quite a miserable experience, and if it meant that I *might* have to come back for a D&E anyway, I decided that the D&E was the right choice (for me). I have a 2 1/2 year old son and couldn't risk an emergency situation for his sake.
I was given three options: wait for natural, use the pill or D&C.
I waited for two weeks and when nothing happened, I went for the pill. The pain was really bad and unbearable at times. I lost too much blood and ended up in the ER. They did an ultrasound and determined that I still have some tissue left so I took a second dose of the pill. I bled for almost two weeks after that. When I went for my follow up, my doctor did another u/s and more tissue was found. We did a D&C to remove the remaining tissue. If I had to do it again (I hope to not ever go through this again), I will schedule a D&C. It was painless for me and it helped with the closure.
i did 'the pill'... it was absolutely miserable/horrible. Pain & cramping was horrible, intense nausea, couldn't even keep the pain pills they gave me down so I had no pain management help. Was dizzy & hot, felt like I was going to pass out any minute. Ended up hunched over the couch one minute & crawling slowly on the floor to the bathroom at the next moment.
There's no "good" experience, but 'the pill' was the most painful several hours I've ever gone through...

Thank you all for the resonses. This makes me feel much better about my decision. I too, waited about three weeks before we had the d&c to see if I would go naturally. I did not and the OB was concerned about infection so we did the d&C.
Thanks again for your responses, I really appreciate you being honest!
