What activities would you suggest? We want to parasail, snuba, hike, and go to a luau... any pointers? Should we buy tickets/ passes before we go or just get them there? Do we need to rent a car or is public transportation/ cabs reliable? Oh, and any spa recs?
Anyway, lots of questions, so any advice would be great. Is there a better board to post this on?
Re: If you've been to Oahu
XP this on The Nest travel board. When I travel I use www.tripadvisor.com. Great forums that are searchable (unlike the Nest). It was SO helpful when we went on our last vacation.
Oahu is very busy; we used public transit while there. It really depends on how comfortable you are w/ public transit vs. wanting your own wheels. Do you have a travel book yet? I'd just go to Barnes & Noble and sit down in the travel aisle. I LOVE New Moon travel books - not a lot of pictures, but very practicle (sp) advice. Also, DK guides ROCK.
Between tripadvisor and a book or two, yoou should be good to go. Have fun.
EDIT: It's been about 8 years since I've been to Oahu, and it was just a weekend, so I have no practical advice. Other than I believe Pearl Harbor is on Oahu and it is an absolute must.

Feeling adventurous? Do a caged shark dive - it was SO cool!

We have a summer home on Oahu. This past summer dh and I took our oldest daughter for the first time (5 years old). We always use public transportation when we are there and have no problems getting around. However, this past summer we rented a car since we had our daughter. We are both so glad we did. It really offered us a lot of flexibility we needed when having someone young along.
Things my daughter enjoyed: hiking Diamond Head, swimming on Waikiki beach, swimming with dolphins, Germain's luau, Dole pineapple plantation. Really she loved just about anything we did.
As far as luau's go we have never been to Germain's before and it was ok at best. We were told it was a good one for children because they eat free and it is a bit smaller than the others. However, it is in an odd location. Paradise Cove is a nice luau. It is bigger and a little more expensive, but we had a blast there, never took a child though so I don't know. Polynesian Cultural Center is HUGE. If you like history and learning about Mormanism (which I found interesting because I didn't know anything about it) you will like this place a lot. We spent two days there in the past, again with no children.
I could tell you a lot of information, but don't know what you want to know. I don't mind helping plan your trip or answer questions as you get some. Just email me at christine at bersche dot com
