Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

D&C vs. "the Pill"

I was given the option to have "the Pill" (in quotes because I don't know the name of it...methotrexate?) or to have a D&C.  My reasons to chose a d&c were personal and I don't feel like going into it right now, but I was wondering if anyone has ever taken option 2?

What was it like? Do you mind sharing your experience?  I almost feel a sense of guilt that I chose one over the other...

Re: D&C vs. "the Pill"

  • I was given the option of the pill with the warning that it could be extremely painful, last longer, and that 3/4s of the women my ob prescribed it to ended up in the ER for an emergency d&c, had to come back for a second dose, or ended up needing a d&c anyways.

Made my choice easier to live with.

  • That is nice to hear.  I am sure we all feel guilt about our loss but for some reason I have been feeling more guilty about it lately.

  • It wasn't an easy choice. I still regret it, but I think I regret more that I miscarried then my decision to be selfish and not prolong my own pain.
  • I wasnt given an option with my two early losses.  I was told the D&C was necessary becuase the first time the baby had been gone for two weeks.  The second one I m/c naturally the sac but my betas went up and the dr was concerned about what was still in my uterus.

When I lost Grace at 18 wks I did choose to labor naturally instead of having the surgery.  My reasoning was that I am a christian and she was going to be born healthy, my body failed (infection in amniotic fluid).  I couldnt be responsible for when God chose to take her to heaven.  She miraculously lived for 4 1/2 hours after being delivered.  I do not regret that decision at all.  I got to see her and spend time holding her while she was alive..

I think its a personal choice and depends on the circumstances..

  • I was given 3 options:

    1. D&E
    2. Wait to let my body m/c on it's own
    3. The pill

My doc explained that with options 2 and 3 there was a pretty good chance that I'd have to come back in for a D&E anyway.  That made my choice easier.  I wouldn't have been able to take waiting and not knowing when it would happen.  My understanding is that the pill is really quite a miserable experience, and if it meant that I *might* have to come back for a D&E anyway, I decided that the D&E was the right choice (for me).  I have a 2 1/2 year old son and couldn't risk an emergency situation for his sake.

  • I was given three options: wait for natural, use the pill or D&C.

I waited for two weeks and when nothing happened, I went for the pill. The pain was really bad and unbearable at times. I lost too much blood and ended up in the ER. They did an ultrasound and determined that I still have some tissue left so I took a second dose of the pill. I bled for almost two weeks after that. When I went for my follow up, my doctor did another u/s and more tissue was found. We did a D&C to remove the remaining tissue. If I had to do it again (I hope to not ever go through this again), I will schedule a D&C. It was painless for me and it helped with the closure.

  • for my 1st loss: i chose: d&c.. i wanted closure and i thought i'd be easier.. but i was nervous because it would be my first time i had gotten surgery.. my 2nd loss: i was given three options: wait to m/c naturally, pills, or d&c.. i first chose waiting to m/c naturally.. i waited only a week.. then my ob suggested either pills or d&c because she was worried about infection.. i chose pills.. the pills were inserted.. then 2hrs later i felt cramps and i felt dizzy.. i immediately took some pain pills my ob prescribed.. i passed a large amounts of tissue that same night and the next morning..i had to go back to my ob for a check up to see if everything passed..my ob had to take some tissue out.. but i was all clear... that's my experience.. which ever option you chose don't feel guilty.. it's a hard choice, but make a choice that's right for you.. my prayers are with you...

  • i did 'the pill'... it was absolutely miserable/horrible. Pain & cramping was horrible, intense nausea, couldn't even keep the pain pills they gave me down so I had no pain management help. Was dizzy & hot, felt like I was going to pass out any minute. Ended up hunched over the couch one minute & crawling slowly on the floor to the bathroom at the next moment.

There's no "good" experience, but 'the pill' was the most painful several hours I've ever gone through...

  • Thank you all for the resonses. This makes me feel much better about my decision. I too, waited about three weeks before we had the d&c to see if I would go naturally. I did not and the OB was concerned about infection so we did the d&C.

Thanks again for your responses, I really appreciate you being honest!
