TTC After a Loss

Negative HPT

How long should it be before I get a negative HPT after a D&E? It's been about 3 weeks since my D&E. I know I'm not pregnant as we've barely had sex since the D&E, but part of me still feels pregnant....weird dreams, boobs still randomly feel sore. So, I was thinking I could test tomorrow just to see, but if I get a positive, is it residual or possible that I'm pregnant? I just want to know what it would mean, before I bother. Thanks!

Re: Negative HPT

  • :::Looks around and shakes head:::

Your just wasting HPTs. Your doctor should be doing betas, he/she will let you know when your at 0.

  • Is your doctor not following your betas down to zero? Do you chart at all? Do you know if you've ovulated yet?

I think the length of time to go to zero has a lot to do with how far along you were, but don't quote me. I had a chemical pregnancy, so I had negative HPTs about 4 days after my positive one and my doctor didn't see fit to follow my betas.

If you did POAS and get a positive HPT,  (with the information currently provided) it would be impossible to know if it was due to residual hcg or if you were pregnant again, so I'd see the doctor immediately (or at least call) it its positive.

  • My doctor never even offered to do betas, so I never knew when my levels went back down to zero.  I had weird feelings during the entire 7 weeks I was waiting for AF after my m/c.  I even had nausea which I didn't have a single moment of while I was actually pregnant.  I think your hormones are just really wacky and will cause you to feel a lot of odd things.  But I can say that in the time I was waiting for AF, I took at least 5 HPTs, so I know how you feel.  Hope is a good thing, and although it makes you do crazy things, it's a good thing to have in life.

This shocks me, did your doctor say why?

This.  My doctor had me come in every 2 weeks til I dropped to 0, and it took 3 tests before it happened.  I'm surprised throughout that 7 week wait they didn't have you come in at all to get tested.

Yea,  I was never offered either. I didn't even really know it was a thing to do at the time.

Maybe it's different after a D & E?  I'm not sure.  I had a natural m/c, so they wanted to make sure I hit 0 before ttc again.

I am charting, but I never feel like I'm very good at it. According to my chart though, I have not Od yet, which is another reason why I'm just about positive there is no way I'm pregnant.

I love this line. :) My DH just bought me a necklace that says 'hope' on it.

  • Well, IMO, to answer your original question based on the info provided, I'd say save yourself the HPTs.  For extra measure, if I were you, I'd call my OB and ask them to run some bw to check and see if your betas are back down to 0.

If you were to take an HPT at this point and get a +, I'd be willing to bet it would just be residual betas showing up.

    That's all I got. :)

What issues do you have with charting? Maybe I can offer advice?

It wouldn't hurt to POAS, really. If it reads positive then call your doctor and demand a beta draw and a follow up beta draw. It shouldn't be that expensive. Sadly, sometimes, we have to tell doctors how to do their jobs.

  • I had my m/c at 10 weeks but the baby was at 5 on oct. 7th. My hCG levels dropped fast and I am now 6dpo. I dont know your cycle and when you usually O but I would guess that you have probably not Oed yet. You should call your dr and ask them to check your hCG levels, that is the only way to know for sure.

  • FWIW, I used a smack load of HPTs during my m/c, but I'm addicted to peeing on sticks.

Yea, in having this discussion, that's what I'm thinking too.

It wouldn't hurt to try if you can spare the HPT, but from the sound of your post, if you and DH haven't bd'ing much, and the timing is showing you probably haven't O'd yet, then it's probably a safe bet that your symptoms are residual.   I'm no doctor, though :)

My doctor was very laid back about everything and with this being my first everything (pregnancy, m/c, etc) I didn't know what to ask for until I started hanging out on this board.  After reading everything that other people's doctors have done for them, I think I will be switching for my next pregnancy.

  • I've never had my betas tracked back down to zero, and I'm on natural mc #3. I guess if I requested it they'd do it, but they don't do it as a matter of course. I guess in my mind, it doesn't really matter. I wouldn't TTC till after 1st period anyway, so I don't really need to know anything till then! And this time we won't be TTC for loooooooong time.
