Toddlers: 24 Months+

XP: When (if ever) did your child stop wanting to be in the stroller?

I'm trying to decide on a double stroller right now. I have my heart kind of set on the Baby Jogger City Mini, because it is awesome. The only problem is that it's also kind of expensive. If I think we'll get a lot of use out of it I would consider it worth it, but I'm wondering if in a few months Leo is going to want to be walking around everywhere and I'm going to have this big expensive stroller that we never use.

So when did your DC stop wanting to be in the stroller? Or do they still love/tolerate it now?

  • well, what will you use it for?  how often do you use your stroller now?

I walk a dog...  so my dd still rides for long walks (she'll be 4 in January, we use a Phil & Ted) In the mall, she likes to walk now.  but really, she could kick back and relax up until this past summer.  But I have a friend whose 18m/o wouldn't ride for anything.  the only time she got her to ride was for jogs when walking the dog.... and even then her dd wanted out. lol.  really depends on the child.

I did use a single and an carrier (hotsling, bjorn) for ds first 9 months.   you could always wait and see.

  • I'm thinking it will mostly be used for walks and the mall, then for random "field trip" type things like the zoo. I would want to think I could get a couple years out of it with these two. Then we're planning on waiting a few years and having two more close together, so if that works out we'd use it again.

I do have a carrier, so waiting and seeing what happens is definitely an option.

  • I worried about this too.  But, my child is almost 3 with a little one due in Dec like you, and I just bought an expensive double (the Phil and Teds).  My DD will walk but she still likes the stroller on outings.  And, we got to the park, zoo, etc. often.

When I have left the stroller at home, I have always regretted it because after awhile, she is tired and wants to be picked up.

The P&T was perfect IMO because it is the size of a single and can be a single when my daughter decides she is too old for the stroller.  But, I foresee at least a year more use out of it for my oldest.

  • Both my kids went through a phase in early toddlerhood in which they fought being in the stroller (or carseat, or highchair, or basically anything that confined them!) but once we powered through that, they learned to like riding in the stroller.

Honestly, I think that if we found a stroller that was large enough, both my kids would STILL love to be squired around long events in a stroller.

My kids are 4 years apart, and we went ahead and got a double jog stroller (nothing expensive, just the In Step TT Double, for about $200) It was absolutely fine for our purposes.  We do a lot of longer daytrips to beaches, camping, fairs, etc.  Stuff where it was really a lot to ask of even a preschooler to hoof it all day.  Having the double stroller gave us a place to stash our gear, and allowed the kids to take a break when they got worn out, even when they were old enough to walk most of the time by themselves.  Once my dd got way too big to ride in the stroller, we used her side to carry our cooler!

  • If my kids were as close as your kids then I would go with the City that you want. Your little one is barely a year so you will likely get your money's worth out of the City. My son and baby brother will be 3yrs 2m apart so for us the Phil & Teds Vibe with doubles seat is the perfect choice. Jack can sit if he wants to but walks most of the time. Around the neighborhood he rides a bike with training wheels.
  • DS is almost 2.5 and we barely have used the stroller since he could walk.

over the summer he went through a phase of being held, so we brought the stroller around and he sat in it periodically.

  • DS starting refusing the stroller shortly after he learned to walk...so about 11 months.  We haven't put him in the stroller in months, so we haven't bothered to get a double.
