Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Rice Cereal? Solids?

When did you/will you start rice cereal? Solids?

We had DD's 4 month appointment on Monday, and I completely forgot to ask about cereal but the doc didn't mention it anyway. I remember starting my nephew on it around DD's age, so I'm not sure.

Re: Rice Cereal? Solids?

  • DD's doctor said we could start anytime when we had DD's 4-month appointment.  We decided to wait until DD's 6-months old.  No reason really, we're just not in any hurry and her doctor said it was fine to wait.

  • I'm not super stressed about starting. She's doing great on BM alone. I was hoping to wait until 6 months anyway, but I don't know, I'm second guessing...
  • DD has been getting cereal for reflux for about a month now.  We started oatmeal last week.
  • I thought this was interesting b/c every pedi is different and it's even changed within recent years. My pedi told me not to start ANY solids (including cereal) until 6mths. He said to start that on day one in the am. On day two, cereal am & pm. Day three introduce a veggie for three days. Then keep doing veggies. After two weeks, do meat (yes meat-odd, I thought so too!!) which is veal or lamb (luxuries of a baby-lamb yummy! lol). Finally after all of this, introduce fruits. Sooooo, we are waiting to do food until 6mths. He has been on cereal for about two weeks now at nighttime since he was nonstop guzzling formula!
  • DS's 4 month appointment is next week and I am going to talk to the pedi then about starting on cereal.  DS has been eating over 40 oz a day for a couple weeks and I am thinking he needs to start on solids, but we'll see what the pedi says.

  • Pedi said we could start cereal at 4 months.  We were planning on waiting until 6 months, but DS started eating so much more and waking up in the middle of the night last week, so we went ahead and started him on cereal at night.  We are not planning on starting any other solids until 6 months though.
  • We've been waffling on that for the past few weeks.  I bought the rice cereal and everything, but then we decided to wait a bit longer, at least until she's able to sit up on her own.  She's really trying, so it may not be that much longer.  Really, I'm not sure what everyone's rush is.  BM alone is great, and she's doing well as things are.

Another poster posted this link, and after reading it, it cemented our idea to wait till around 6 months.  (A little before or a little after the 6 months mark is fine with us, too.)

Yup, I've noticed this too.  My IRL friends' pedi's all told them something different from what my pedi said.  And in the end, I just think none of them know what they're talking about anyway.  :D  I've also read stuff about how it doesn't matter what order you introduce them in.  According to some, it also doesn't really matter if you stagger new foods or introduce them all at once, because it's not been shown to prevent allergies after all. (Feeding Baby Green is the book I read that in.)
