3rd Trimester

Anyone been diagnosed with low iron?

I had my glucose test yesterday and while my sugar was fine, the lab tech said I had low iron. I was testing at a 27 when it should be around 34.  I am kind of freaking out because I know all the risks that can come from iron deficiency.

Anyone had a perfectly healthy child with low iron?  Or not worried about a low iron result.  I started taking supplements immediately, but I hope I didn't do my baby too much harm.

  • The way my dr. explained it to me was that the baby will take what he needs leaving me with the low iron.

  • I think many of us were diagnosed with low iron.  I have not had my baby yet, but I just take 2 iron pills per day.  I'm sure your LO will be fine...they wouldn't tell you to take something that would hurt LO.  Try not to stress about it.
  • I have had low iron with every pregnancy.  All healthy babies were born.  Try an OTC iron supplement with stool softener.  That is what I was put on this time and I have had zero constipation from it.

This. I think like, half of the women here have been diagnosed with this. I'm severely anemic. I forget to take my iron all the time. It just makes me feel run down and tired because LO is taking the iron for herself. Your baby will be fine. Just take the supplements (mostly for your sake) your doctor prescribes/recommends.

  • I had low iron with my last pregnancy, with DD. The OB said that the low iron would affect me but not the baby. She said the baby takes all it needs first and mom is left with little so the iron supplements are for you more than the baby. It helps for not needing a transfusion after delivery :-)

I meant I hope I didn't harm the baby by being iron deficient for having low iron for however long.

  • You are totally fine!  It's very normal in pregnancy.  Take your supplements and I ditto a previous poster who suggested the ones with the stool softener!

    This.

  • The same thing happened to me at my glucose test, so I have been on an iron supplement since then as well.  I think the supplement is more for you than it is for your baby.  My doctor wasn't concerned at all, and he reminded me again that the baby will take everything it needs from the mom, so your LO should be just fine.

  • I was also told at my 1-hr that I had low iron - not low enough to need a supplement or anything and they didn't seem too concerned about it.

If you're looking for iron-rich foods - they suggested Frosted Mini Wheats.  I think it has something like 90% of the suggested daily iron intake in one serving.

Here is your answer. I am anemic and I was with my daughter. She came out beet red and had plenty, but left me with very little iron. They take what they need, and don't leave much for you.

My mother had 3. She's always asking me about my iron because she was deficient during every pregnancy. My siblings and I were all very healthy babies.

  • I had this. I've been taking iron pills once a day since. It should be fine. I think it's fairly common. Just take iron pills. you'll be okay.

  • I have. But from what I gathered from the Dr. the baby was taking all it needed and leaving me with a low stash. So I take iron pills also.
  • I was put on supplements also after my glucose test (they obviously also tested my iron) and I am not concerned about it. It is still high enough to be providing baby with all the iron she needs, like pp said, she'll get hers, and you'll be the one with the deficiency.
  • anemia is very common in pregnancy - just take slow release FE pills.  good luck!
